Resilience: More Than Preventing Negative Outcomes
Resilience is typically studied as either a recovery/ bouncing back factor where you return to baseline levels of functioning before an acute stressor had occurred, or as a sustainability factor where you continue performing/ adapting well despite the presence of a chronic stressor. How resilience is typically operationalised, in terms of outcome, is whether the individual survives the acute trauma/stressor and/or chronic stress and still remains psychopathology free. If he doesn’t then he is non resilient, but if he indeed remains free of negative outcomes then he is resilient. Sometimes, very rarely, in case of...

Pharmacies might be able to support people with their depression medicines
The Cochrane Common Mental Disorders Group had published more than 180 reviews relevant to conditions such as anxiety and depression by the end of 2019. In December 2019, they added a review of whether pharmacist support can help people take their anti-depressants and we asked one of the authors, Jennifer Brown from the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York in the UK, to tell us about the latest findings. Introducing GLEO: SandyG ’s Positive Tetrad
Most of you would be familiar with Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Triad also known as the Negative Triad. To recap, a depressed person is characterized by negative views about the self, negative views about the world and negative views about the future. Guilt, shame, worthlessness, not accepting the self are all aspects of negative views about the self, which I conveniently relabel as self-loathing. It can even be conceived that these self concepts are closer to a neurotic belief system. Similarly, being pessimistic and having a sense of hopelessness, is what can be thought of as having negative views about the f...

How Do I Matter to Thee, Let Me Count The Ways!
I recently came across an article by Andrew Reece, Martin Seligman, Roy Baumeister, Barry Schwartz et al on Mattering which argued that in work/organizational contexts, action-based mattering is the way to go and it is more associated with feelings of self-efficacy rather than self-esteem. That made me look up the sparse literature on Mattering and I spent a few happy hours down that rabbit hole. What I am proposing below, however, is my own classification of how someone can matter, after taking into account existing concepts and frameworks. Why is mattering important? Unless we have a sense that we matter, we may n...
