Cutaneous larva migrans in early infancy: A Ugandan case report
In this report, we provide guidance to a challenging clinical situation in a low-resource setting environment. We present an approach to the treatment of helminths in infants presenting with a cutaneous form of the disease. AbstractHelminths are an important cause of worm infestation in low-income countries. The majority spread with soil to skin contact. In unusual patients presenting below 1 year, treatment can be challenging. The disease can be self-limiting; however, treatment is believed to reduce progression to more serious disease. Here, we present a case of a 3-month-old with cutaneous larva migrans. Albendazole and Mebendazole as Anti-Parasitic and Anti-Cancer Agents: an Update
Korean J Parasitol. 2021 Jun;59(3):189-225. doi: 10.3347/kjp.2021.59.3.189. Epub 2021 Jun 21.ABSTRACTThe use of albendazole and mebendazole, i.e., benzimidazole broad-spectrum anthelmintics, in treatment of parasitic infections, as well as cancers, is briefly reviewed. These drugs are known to block the microtubule systems of parasites and mammalian cells leading to inhibition of glucose uptake and transport and finally cell death. Eventually they exhibit ovicidal, larvicidal, and vermicidal effects on parasites, and tumoricidal effects on hosts. Albendazole and mebendazole are most frequently prescribed for treatment of i...
