Consensus recommendations on mental health issues in Phelan-McDermid syndrome
Eur J Med Genet. 2023 Apr 19:104770. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmg.2023.104770. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhelan-McDermid syndrome is a rare genetic condition caused by a deletion encompassing the 22q13.3 region or a pathogenic variant of the gene SHANK3. The clinical presentation is variable, but main characteristics include global developmental delay/intellectual disability (ID), marked speech impairment or delay, along with other features like hypotonia and somatic or psychiatric comorbidities. This publication delineates mental health, developmental and behavioural themes across the lifetime of individuals with PMS as inform...

Mortality and disability-adjusted life years in motorcyclists in Latin America and the Caribbean during the first decade of action for road safetyMortalidad y a ños de vida ajustados por discapacidad de los motociclistas en América Latina y el Caribe en la primera década de seguridad vial
CONCLUSIONS: The data underscore the importance of developing surveillance actions aimed at preventing motorcycle accidents, since the observed declining rates are still insufficient to address the morbidity and mortality associated with road accidents as a public health problem.PMID:37066130 | PMC:PMC10100995 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.68 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Cancer mortality predictions for 2023 in Latin America with focus on stomach cancer
CONCLUSION: Certified cancer mortality remains generally lower in Latin America (apart from Cuba), as compared to North America and Europe; this may be partly due to death certification validity.PMID:37038996 | DOI:10.1097/CEJ.0000000000000806 (Source: Cancer Control)

Trans-Atlantic aeromedical repatriation of multiple COVID-19 patients: a hybrid military-civilian model
We describe the safe transfer of patients with COVID-19 using a combined military–civilian model. In our view, we have demonstrated that patients with COVID-19 can be aeromedically transferred while ensuring the safety of patients and crew using a hybrid military–civilian model; this report contains lessons for future aeromedical evacuation of patients with COVID-19. Trends of legacy and emerging organic contaminants in a sediment core from Cienfuegos Bay, Cuba, from 1990 to 2015
This study analysed a dated sediment core from Cienfuegos Bay, Cuba, to assess the occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), alternative halogenated flame retardants (aHFRs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), and phthalates (PAEs) from 1990 to 2015. The results evidence the continuing presence of historical regulated contaminants (PCBs, OCPs, and PBDEs) in the southern basin of Cienfuegos Bay. PCB contamination declined since 2007, likely in response to the gradual global phasing out of PCB containing materials. There have been relatively consiste...
