How to learn reading CT A/P for interns?
I'm a GS intern, and I have been trying to look at all the CT scans that I can. I seriously lack decent foundations, so honestly I have no idea what I'm looking at 90% of the time. The advice I keep getting is "look at more CTs", but I seem to lack basic understanding, so there's essentially nothing to build on. Anyone experiencing/has experienced this? Is there a website/resource where I can learn the most basic tips for reading CT abd? Thank you (Source: Student Doctor Network)

When you suspect kidney stones
When do you get a CT scan? I've heard and seen everything from: always, first time they've had stone, systemically ill, hydronephrosis on bedside ultrasound. I've also seen people with mild hydro and suspected stone go home. The practice pattern varies wildly and I'm trying to gain a better understanding of what is important and what is not. What do you look for, what are your red flags, when do you scan? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

CT abdomen IV contrast vs IV & oral contrast
THis is a question I had been wondering about... When do you guys order IV and oral contrast for a abdominal CT scan? In other words, when would you definitely add oral contrast? From what I understand IV contrast is sufficient for things like diverticulitis, colitis. At my shop, IV contrast ONLY is sufficient for the following: BMI > 20 Age > 25 No history of GI tract altering surgery (e.g. gastric bypass) No history or suspicion of inflammatory bowel disease No abdominal or pelvic surgery... Bridging the gap: cta and ivus of the heart
CTA or IVUS – which is better? CTA (computed tomography angiography) is currently the gold standard for evaluating myocardial bridging, because it‘s highly accurate. However, recent research has shown that CTA is not all-seeing and all-knowing. IVUS (intravascular ultrasound) may be the better choice. The study included 64 patients with symptoms of ischemia who underwent both CTA and IVUS. CTA earned its gold star, but surprisingly missed the majority of septal branches and soft plaques that could potentially cause serious complications. Interesting? Read more just clicking on ...

Different scans
I am not sure where to ask these types of questions. I am starting medical school next semester and I know what the different scans look like but I get confused when you would use a CT scan vs an MRI vs ultrasound. I am just curious if someone could direct me to a website or tell me. For example, you would use this type of scan for cancer, this type of scan for crohns disease. I just see all these diseases and they each have their own way of Diagnosing it with scans but is there a way to... Different scans (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Can someone help with next steps...scared mom here
Hi All, Please forgive my frequent posting lately. My 8yr old just came home from the hospital this afternoon. Here is a timeline of events up to this point. PFTs have slowly declined over the last few months. Culture shows an abundance of staph and she is put on Augmentin. Does nothing and PFTs do not go up. CT scan shows infection, loss of elasticity, and mucus build up in the lung tissue. I am told the CT scan actually looks better than PFTs would indicate. Last Friday she goes in for a PICC and bronch. Bronch shows normal lungs. The doctor who did it said her lungs look great. No inflammation, no mucus. P...

Educate me about Pseudonomas please
Hi All, My daughter is preparing to go to the hospital next week for a PICC line and IV antibiotics. She is 8 and has never cultures pseudomonas. However, her CT scan shows some infection and blockage deep down in her lungs. While she is getting the PICC she will have a bronchioscope and they will suck out some of the gunk that is way down deep and they will culture it. I will be shocked if it is not growing pseudonamas. This scares me as I have heard that it is really hard to get rid of and always comes back. I feel like her culturing it is the beginning of a very long losing battle. She will receive antibiotics b...

Need advice from more experienced parents
Hi All, My daughter has been doing really well up until a couple of months ago. Her PFTs started dropping. She just finished a course of Augmentin as she was culturing an abundance of staph. PFTs stayed the same. Had a CT scan which shows loss of elasticity and some scarring in the lower lobes. Is going in next week for a PICC and IV antibiotics and intense chest therapy. She is in the Orkambi trial and, thankfully, I believe it has helped her maintain a healthy weight. She was in hospital two years ago at this time and she looked very sick. Today she is pink, active, has a healthy BMI, o2 at 98%. My fear is tha...

so frustrated...major drop in lung function so fast
Has this happened to anyone else? I was always quite healthy with CF..the occasional exacerbation, but oral antibiotics took care of it. FEV always around 60-70. Then, two months ago, I got pretty sick. Fevers, the whole bit. The fevers and chills went away after two weeks of IV antibiotics, but now I still feel like crap (lung wise)! I never really did feel better. My lung function went down to 34% and is staying there. I was put on prednisone for 16 days. That is done now, and it did nothing. I started symbicort at the time I started prednisone too, and I'm still on that. I went in today and the lung function only went u...

Just found out daughter has Mycobacterium Abscessus
We just found out my daughter 11 has mycobacterium Abscesses (not MAC which she has also cultured in past but now apparently clear) and will start the treatment process soon. right now they r recommending IV Amikacin, IV imipenem, and azithromycin for at least 5 weeks (up to 3months) until cultures clear. Her pfts are still in the 80s/ low 90s, but it's still a drop from her baseline of over 100 last year. Do you have any advice as we start this journey? We are thinking of doing a port instead of PICC due to the potential length of time. I am starting my research on treatments and these medicines.... Seems like they wa...
