Child-Patient Perspective on Results After Correction of Sagittal Synostosis and the Difference Between Child-Patient and Parent's Perspectives
CONCLUSION: The majority of patients were satisfied with the outcome of their intervention. The child's perspective seems to be a valuable addition to evaluate sagittal synostosis surgery as it is independent of the CI and differentiates between different surgical techniques. In addition, the patient's perspective is comparable to the parent's perspective, but gives more details on adaptive behavior.PMID:38722327 | DOI:10.1097/SCS.0000000000010263 (Source: Hand Surgery)

An update on tests used for intraoperative monitoring of cognition during awake craniotomy
ConclusionsLanguage remains the most extensively tested cognitive domain. However, a broader range of tests are now implemented during awake craniotomy and there are (new developed) tests which received more attention. The rapid development in the field is reflected in the included studies in this review. Nevertheless, for some cognitive domains (e.g., executive functions and memory), there is still a need for developing tests that can be used during awake surgery. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

Cranial sutures
Prog Brain Res. 2024;285:127-136. doi: 10.1016/bs.pbr.2024.02.019. Epub 2024 Apr 25.ABSTRACTCranial sutures are not of great concern to the modern neurosurgeon, except when abnormalities interfere with the skull's shape and its ability to expand during childhood. It is a commonplace that a craniotomy may cross a variety of sutures without providing any extra difficulty to the operator. The sagittal suture does remain useful as a definition of the midline of the cranium and as an indicator of the underlying sinus. Galen for reasons that are far from clear, "observed" relationships between the sutures, the meninges and the p...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1784: Hypnosis-Assisted Awake Craniotomy for Eloquent Brain Tumors: Advantages and Pitfalls
Conclusion: HAAC is a safe alternative to MAC as it reduces perioperative stress and increases overall satisfaction. Further research is necessary to assess whether hypnosis is clinically beneficial. (Source: Cancers)

A Novel Case of Paediatric Petrous Apex Cholesterol Granuloma
AbstractThe petrous apex is medial most part of temporal bone, which is surrounded by vital structures. Cholesterol granuloma is the most common benign lesion of the petrous apex. Symptoms are related to mass effect and/or direct involvement of closely adjacent vital structures. The lesions can be manged either by open surgery via craniotomy or through the newer endoscopic approach. Case report and review of the literature concerning cholesterol granulomas of the petrous apex and their management. The lesion was approached endoscopically trans nasal and trans sphenoid and cholesterol granuloma was excised and marsupialised...

The Effect of Predictive Nursing Care for the Treatment of Senile Cerebral Tumors Treated by Craniotomy
CONCLUSION: The provision of predictive nursing care to patients with senile cranial tumors treated with craniotomy can effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative intracranial infection, and the nursing effect is better for patients with or without intracranial infection, which can significantly contribute to the quality of life quality improvement and effectively enhance patients' satisfaction. Further research is imperative to evaluate and promote the practice as a significant toolkit in clinical practice. Future investigations should focus on the enduring impact of predictive nursing interventions in senile cereb...

The effect of dexmedetomidine on the postoperative recovery of patients with severe traumatic brain injury undergoing craniotomy treatment: a retrospective study
ConclusionThe use of DEX in the ICU can effectively reduce the incidence of delirium in patients who return to the general ward after craniotomy. DEX had no adverse effect on the prognosis of patients other than causing bradycardia. (Source: European Journal of Medical Research)

Surgical Approaches to Resection of Olfactory Groove Meningiomas: Comparative Meta-analysis of the Endoscopic Endonasal versus Transcranial and Unilateral versus Bilateral Approaches
Conclusions Though the literature is limited, current evidence suggests that the endoscopic endonasal approach may be favorable over conventional craniotomy for select olfactory groove meningioma patients. Where craniotomy is used, unilateral approaches appear to reduce complications and the risk of olfaction loss. Quantitative Analysis of the Supraorbital, Transorbital Microscopic, and Transorbital Neuroendoscopic Approaches to the Anterior Skull Base and Paramedian Vasculature
Conclusion SOC provides superior surgical freedom for targets that require more lateral maneuverability, but the transorbital corridor is an option for accessing the frontal lobe base and terminal ICA. Instrument freedom differs quantifiably between the microscope and endoscope. A combined visualization strategy is optimal for the transorbital corridor.
