A Novel Case of Paediatric Petrous Apex Cholesterol Granuloma
AbstractThe petrous apex is medial most part of temporal bone, which is surrounded by vital structures. Cholesterol granuloma is the most common benign lesion of the petrous apex. Symptoms are related to mass effect and/or direct involvement of closely adjacent vital structures. The lesions can be manged either by open surgery via craniotomy or through the newer endoscopic approach. Case report and review of the literature concerning cholesterol granulomas of the petrous apex and their management. The lesion was approached endoscopically trans nasal and trans sphenoid and cholesterol granuloma was excised and marsupialised...

The Effect of Predictive Nursing Care for the Treatment of Senile Cerebral Tumors Treated by Craniotomy
CONCLUSION: The provision of predictive nursing care to patients with senile cranial tumors treated with craniotomy can effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative intracranial infection, and the nursing effect is better for patients with or without intracranial infection, which can significantly contribute to the quality of life quality improvement and effectively enhance patients' satisfaction. Further research is imperative to evaluate and promote the practice as a significant toolkit in clinical practice. Future investigations should focus on the enduring impact of predictive nursing interventions in senile cereb...

The effect of dexmedetomidine on the postoperative recovery of patients with severe traumatic brain injury undergoing craniotomy treatment: a retrospective study
ConclusionThe use of DEX in the ICU can effectively reduce the incidence of delirium in patients who return to the general ward after craniotomy. DEX had no adverse effect on the prognosis of patients other than causing bradycardia. (Source: European Journal of Medical Research)

Surgical Approaches to Resection of Olfactory Groove Meningiomas: Comparative Meta-analysis of the Endoscopic Endonasal versus Transcranial and Unilateral versus Bilateral Approaches
Conclusions Though the literature is limited, current evidence suggests that the endoscopic endonasal approach may be favorable over conventional craniotomy for select olfactory groove meningioma patients. Where craniotomy is used, unilateral approaches appear to reduce complications and the risk of olfaction loss. Quantitative Analysis of the Supraorbital, Transorbital Microscopic, and Transorbital Neuroendoscopic Approaches to the Anterior Skull Base and Paramedian Vasculature
Conclusion SOC provides superior surgical freedom for targets that require more lateral maneuverability, but the transorbital corridor is an option for accessing the frontal lobe base and terminal ICA. Instrument freedom differs quantifiably between the microscope and endoscope. A combined visualization strategy is optimal for the transorbital corridor. Predictors of Mortality after Craniotomy for Geriatric Traumatic Brain Injury
: With a sustained increase in the proportion of elderly trauma patients, geriatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant source of morbidity, mortality and resource utilization. The aim of our study was to assess the predictors of mortality in geriatric TBI patients who underwent craniotomy. (Source: Injury)

Enhancing the quality of evidence, comparability, and reproducibility in brain arteriovenous malformations treated with open surgery research: a systematic review and proposal of a reporting guideline for surgical and clinical outcomes
This study aims to assess the quality of studies reporting clinical and surgical outcomes for bAVMs treated by open surgery and develop a reporting guideline checklist focusing on essential elements to ensure comparability and reproducibility.  This is a systematic literature review that followed the PRISMA guidelines with the search inMedline,Embase, andWeb of Science databases, for studies published between January 1, 2018, and December 1, 2023. Included studies were scrutinized focusing on seven domains: (1) Assessment of How Studies Reported on the Baseline Characteristics of the Patient Sample; (2) Assessment and rep...

Establishment of a model to predict mortality after decompression craniotomy for traumatic brain injury
ConclusionsWe developed a risk model that has clinical significance for the early identification of patients who will still die after DC. Interestingly, we also identified a new early risk factor for TBI patients after DC, that is, preoperative mean CT value of the superior sagittal sinus (p <  .05). (Source: Brain and Behavior)

Transmastoid pediatric penetrating brain injury, interdisciplinary, and tailored patient's treatment
CONCLUSION: Radiological tools, notably skull X-rays and head CT scans, are pivotal for the precise diagnosis of pediatric PBI. The combined mastoidectomy and retro sigmoid craniotomy approach offers a safe and efficient means of foreign body removal. Tailoring treatments to individual patient needs enhances outcomes.PMID:38628538 | PMC:PMC11021077 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_18_2024 (Source: Surgical Neurology International)

Rare vermian pilocytic astrocytoma with recurrent spontaneous hemorrhage in the elderly: A case report and review of literature
CONCLUSION: PA in the elderly is a rare disease with distinct histologic and genetic peculiarities. This case review showed one of the oldest cases of cerebellar vermian PA presenting with recurrent spontaneous intratumoral hemorrhage, an extremely rare occurrence in benign glioma. Although complete surgical excision is recommended, partial resection is advocated for morbidly adherent tumors. Overall prognosis is worse in elderly PA.PMID:38628526 | PMC:PMC11021065 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_978_2023 (Source: Surgical Neurology International)
