Face Mask Detects Respiratory Viruses, Alerts User
Scientists at Shanghai Tongji University in China have created a face mask that can alert the wearer to the presence of respiratory viruses in the surrounding environment, including the viruses behind COVID-19 and influenza. The mask includes aptamers, which are short sequences of DNA or RNA that can bind to protein targets. When viral particles bind to the aptamers, ion-gated transistors boost the signal so that the mask can sensitively detect small amounts of virus. The mask sends a message to the wearer’s smartphone within 10 minutes of detecting the virus. The technology could be very valuable for healthcare staff or...

Friday Feature: RISE Hybrid Academy
Colleen HroncichSchool closures, mask policies, and curriculum battles have surely accelerated the growth of education options over the past couple of years. But some parents, teachers, and educational entrepreneurs were ahead of the curve —like Nicholle Anatol, founder ofRISE Hybrid Academy.A veteran teacher of over 20 years, Nicholle was always frustrated because she saw too many kids falling through the cracks and knew there were other ways to teach them. She founded RISE, an online private school, so she could provide another option to children no matter where they live.“So much of life today is individualized...

Mentoring Academic Librarians for Research Success
The major take-away from this book chapter is that the feedback about the IRDL Mentor Program (in place from 2016 to present day), from both mentors and Scholars, has been overwhelmingly positive. In the chapter we describe the process used by the program to recruit and select mentors, the pairing of mentors with their Scholars, and the general administration of the IRDL mentor program. We offer strategies for making the mentor-Scholar relationship work and tips for the design of a formal mentoring program. A consistent refrain from both the mentors and the Scholars is that the experience, “is much better overall than ot...

The New Kid on the Block: How Blockchain Can Revolutionize Access to Healthcare Data
The following is a guest article by Guy Tish, Co-Founder and CTO at Briya. Data is the bread and butter of the digital health industry. Researchers and caregivers must be able to access high quality and up-to-date information securely. This is key to accelerating time to medicine, developing new treatments and providing better care. But where does this information come from? The truth is that patient data is scattered across multiple locations and there is no one central database that conveniently stores it all in one place. There is a very good reason for this – healthcare records contain highly sensitive informatio...

The Hard Thing About Crypto Purgatory
Jack SoloweyOn Thursday, September 15, 2022, the Senate Agriculture Committee will hold a hearing on the bipartisan Digital Commodities Consumer Protection Act of 2022 (the Stabenow ‐Boozman bill). Thebill seeks to answer one of the most frequent questions in crypto policy: who will oversee crypto marketplaces and what will that look like? While the bill makes important strides – appropriately giving the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as opposed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), exclusive jurisdiction over “digital commodity” trades – it sidesteps the hard question of what exa...
