Glacier Northwest v. Teamsters: The Supreme Court Gets Concrete
Walter OlsonInGlacier Northwest, Inc., v. Teamsters, decided today, the Supreme Court showed a  good measure of consensus and civility in settling a potentially contentious issue in labor law: whether a company is entitled to sue a union that has so arranged its strike so as to put the company’s equipment, as well as its perishable inventory, at risk of destruction. Eight Justices led b y Justice Amy Coney Barrett said the company was entitled to sue, while Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the only dissenter, said the dispute should properly be heard by the National Labor Relations Board. Along the way, the Justices br...

The importance of listening in health care: a mother ’ s journey advocating for children with chronic Lyme disease
My husband, a physician, and I have four wonderful children – a son and three daughters. I look back over the past decade and wonder, “Why?” Why did my daughters contract Lyme disease and not my son or husband? Why was it so difficult to establish a diagnosis? Why are doctors specializing in treating patients Read more… The importance of listening in health care: a mother’s journey advocating for children with chronic Lyme disease originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Domestic Benefits from Foreign Tax Havens
Adam N. MichelForeign investment in low ‐tax countries complements U.S. production and expands global investment.Low ‐tax countries are often derided for either attracting illusory corporate profits without changing true investment behavior or for attracting international investment to the detriment of usually higher‐tax countries. However, research consistently finds that when multinational businesses i nvest abroad, they also increase investment at home. For example, Mihir Desai, C. Fritz Foley, and James Hinesfind that“one dollar of additional foreign capital spending is associated with 3.5 dollars of ad...

ChatGPT Misses the Mark in Healthcare – What It Needs to Succeed
The following is a guest article by Michael Blum, MD, Cardiologist, Co-founder and CEO at BeeKeeperAI and Former Chief Medical Information Officer at UCSF Medical Center The advent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT3 (GPT3) Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot sparked an unprecedented societal appreciation for the power of AI. While AI has been broadly deployed across industries for a decade, it remained mostly hidden from the typical user. The release of GPT3 in late 2022 changed all of that.  Suddenly, a user with minimal computer literacy and no programming or data science training whatsoever could ask an AI-based applicati...

How AI Is Transforming the Patient-Provider Relationship
The following is a guest article by Ronen Lavi, Co-Founder and CEO at Navina As Paul Starr famously wrote about in The Social Transformation of American Medicine, the healer’s relationship with the patient was historically perceived not unlike a religious leader’s relationship with a parishioner: an opportunity to get closer to a higher spiritual plane.  Today, with patients routinely “consulting” with online resources, self-diagnosing, or requesting medication they saw on a television ad, the physician-patient relationship has materially changed. That said, the objectives have not: patients wish for their doctors...

What Can We Learn from the Envision Bankruptcy?
This study ignited a firestorm of press criticism and was followed by an aggressive lobbying and PR campaign funded by United and other large commercial payers  aimed at restricting balance billing by firms like Envision.  This campaign culminated in the Dec 2020 Congressional passage of the No Surprises Act, which effectively ended balance billing and subjected thousands of Envision’s out-of-network bills to an arbitration process. NSA went into effect in January 2022.   Ironically, days prior to its Chapter 11 filing, Envision won a $91 million judgment from an arbitration panel against United fo...

La Sombrita, or, How to Fail at Infrastructure
Paul MatzkoLos Angeles spent $200,000 on La Sombrita ( ‘“in the shade”), a bus stop shade/light structure that provides littleshade or light. It has been almost too easy to criticize its design, the token DEI framing given to the project, how most of the funds went to a global junket for the designers, or the fact that city officials held a tone deaf celebratory press conference for its unveiling. Would this “make waiting for the bus at night [feel]safer” to you?But La Sombrita isn ’t really the problem. Rather, its failures are symptoms of its designers trying to work around deeper, structural problems ...

The ERA – An Amendment Who ’s Time Has Come
BY MIKE MAGEE Believe it or not, The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was first introduced 100 years ago in 1923. But it was only adopted by Congress by a 2/3 majority vote 49 years later in 1972. That was simply step 1 in the world’s most complex and difficult national constitutional amendment process. Step 2, approval by 3/4 of the states, seemed off to a running start with 28 of the required 38 states signing up that first year. But 1972 was also the year that Phyllis Schafly, an outspoken supporter of patriarchy and stay-at-home motherhood, began echoing her anti-ERA message on Chicago News Radio WBBM. The followin...

5 Ways to Close the Cloud Security Gaps in Healthcare
The following is a guest article by TJ Houske, Senior Vice President of Technology, Operations, and Engineering at OTAVA Ransomware attacks against healthcare organizations doubled in the last five years, according to a new study by JAMA Health Forum. The most common victims have been health clinics. This year’s Ponemon report also reinforces the fact that ransomware continues to impact patient safety. Its survey of hospital IT and security leaders found that significantly more respondents said that ransomware attacks increased complications from medical procedures. While these issues are clearly serious, healthcare orga...

Would You Picket Over AI?
By KIM BELLARD I’m paying close attention to strike by the Writers Guild Of America (WGA), which represents “Hollywood” writers.  Oh, sure, I’m worried about the impact on my viewing habits, and I know the strike is really, as usual, about money, but what got my attention is that it’s the first strike I’m aware of where impact of AI on their jobs is one of the key issues. It may or may not be the first time, but it’s certainly not going to be the last. The WGA included this in their demands: “Regulate use of artificial intelligence on MBA-covered projects: AI can’t write or rewrite literary ...

Catastrophic Enrollment Declines at Some Community Colleges
Marc JoffeCollege enrollment has been shrinking, putting pressure on institutions below the elite tier. Although most attention has focused on failures of for ‐profit colleges and smaller private liberal arts schools, public colleges are not immune from distress. Community college enrollment has been especially weak. A review of federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) data from 2011 and 2021 shows that several community colleg es have suffered catastrophic enrollment declines over the ten‐year period. These institutions may be candidates for consolidation, which would save taxpayer money.N...
