Cancers, Vol. 13, Pages 1919: Cancer: New Needs, New Models. Is It Time for a Community Oncologist? Another Brick in the Wall
erto Firenze Over the last few decades, thanks to early detection, effective drugs, and personalized treatments, the natural history of cancer has radically changed. Thanks to these advances, we have observed how survival of cancer patients has increased, becoming an ever more important goal in cancer care. Effective clinical governance of survivorship care is essential to ensure a successful transition between active and post-treatment life, identifying optimization of healthcare outcomes and quality of life for patients as the primary objectives. For these reasons, potential intervention models must consider these di...

Musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging standards in the UK: British Society of Skeletal Radiologists (BSSR) position statement
Br J Radiol. 2021 Apr 1:20210198. doi: 10.1259/bjr.20210198. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere has been some concern expressed by UK regulator, the Professional Standards Authority regarding the risks arising from Independent sonographer practices. The Professional Standards Authority presented evidence demonstrating that there are instances of harm occurring because of errors made by non-radiologists performing musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS), particularly MSKUS-guided interventions. This document summarises British Society of Skeletal Radiologists position for Musculoskeletal use of ultrasound in UK, representing th...

Innovations in self care and close care made during COVID 19 pandemic: a narrative review
John Øvretveit International Journal of Health Governance, Vol. 26, No. 2, pp.88-99 Previously, health self-care and informal or “close-care” for family and friends were receiving increasing attention, but became more important during the COVID-2019 pandemic. Sometimes, this was because formal services became less physically accessible to patients and were overburdened by patients ill with COVID-2019. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of this phenomenon and consider the implications for clinical governance. A five-step search and narrative review method were used, and c...

Proposed training pathway with initial experience to set up robotic hepatobiliary and pancreatic service
We describe our experience of setting up a robotic HPB programme with clinical outcomes and propose a training pathway that would help prospective centres in setting up their own robotic HPB service with robust clinical governance oversight. After gaining colleagues’ and departmental support, approval from the hospital clinical governan ce, finance department and new intervention procedure committee was sought. A team of two consultant surgeons, three assistants and three theatre staff went through a structured training programme sponsored mainly by the industry. Surgeon training consisted of online modules, simulation, ...

The Comparability and Utility of Perioperative Mortality Rates in Global Health
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo examine the comparability and utility of perioperative mortality rate (POMR) as a key global surgery metric and the added potential for mortality review to drive continuous quality improvement.Recent FindingsThere is a wide variation in the perioperative mortality rate (POMR) reported between countries, even for the three Bellwether procedures (emergency laparotomy, emergency caesarean section, management of an open fracture) and other common procedures. Clinical registries such as the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit target high-mortality procedures. Nationally, administrative databases may ...

Defining the Assessment and Treatment Competencies to Deliver Low-Intensity Cognitive Behavior Therapy: A Multi-Center Validation Study.
Abstract Despite the vastly increased dissemination of the low-intensity (LI) version of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for the treatment of anxiety and depression, no valid and reliable indices of the LI-CBT clinical competencies currently exist. This research therefore sought to develop and evaluate two measures: the low-intensity assessment competency scale (LIAC) and the low-intensity treatment competency scale (LITC). Inductive and deductive methods were used to construct the competency scales and detailed rating manuals were prepared. Two studies were then completed. The first study used a quantita...

Mapping clinical governance to practitioner roles and responsibilities
Maureen Alice Flynn, Niamh M. Brennan Journal of Health Organization and Management, Vol. 35, No. 9, pp.18-33 While clinical governance is assumed to be part of organisational structures and policies, implementation of clinical governance in practice (the praxis) can be markedly different. This paper draws on insights from hospital clinicians, managers and governors on how they interpret the term “clinical governance”. The influence of best-practice and roles and responsibilities on their interpretations is considered. The research is based on 40 in-depth, semi-structured interviews wi...

IJERPH, Vol. 17, Pages 9335: Post-Acute COVID-19 Rehabilitation Network Proposal: From Intensive to Extensive and Home-Based IT Supported Services
This article aims to present a proposal, based on the principles of clinical governance, health management and information technology (IT), and to respond to the need for a structured organization model for post-acute COVID-19 rehabilitation. The authors present a regional-based model of a network of clinicians and healthcare managers using a dedicated IT platform to achieve both effectiveness and efficiency objectives, to ensure coordination of the available resources and the most appropriate rehabilitative treatment for patients. The proposed post-acute COVID-19 rehabilitation network has been designed according to the m...

Training in paediatric virology in the UK: A brief overview (Review).
Authors: Drysdale SB, Bennett AM, Greenough A Abstract Paediatric virology is a bold, new scientific field, where paediatrics focuses on the newly acquired knowledge from clinical virology, enriched with current advances in epidemiology, molecular medicine, evidence-based medicine, clinical governance, quality improvement, pharmacology and immunology. Although there are several methods with which to obtain training in paediatric viral infections in the UK, paediatric virology does not currently exist as a specific subspecialty. The aim of the present article was to present the existing educational platform...
