A doctor’s personal story of vaccine hesitancy
Before I was a doctor, I was a dad. My oldest daughter was two years old when I started medical school, so I did a little bit of parenting without the benefit of any medical knowledge at all. I remember her 2-month visit well. It was one of the few visits that I was able to make, and my baby girl was getting her first set of shots (after leaving the hospital). I’ll be honest; I hadn’t given it much thought. I was fully immunized as a child, and I’m pretty sure I was fully re-immunized when I signed my life over to the U.S. Navy. It wasn’t that I didn’t love my child — I did. And I still do. My girls are ama...

What is pediatrics? It’s more than just runny noses.
When I chose a career in pediatrics, everyone had something to say about my decision. While most of my friends and colleagues were supportive, there were more than a few that just couldn’t understand why I would sign up for a lifetime of “ear infections and runny noses.” Even among other medical professionals, it’s not uncommon for pediatrics to be viewed as a less-than-serious specialty. Maybe it’s the sea horses on the walls. Or the bow ties. Or the fact that we really do see a lot of runny noses. And to be fair, most of our patients aren’t all that sick, and many of them would get better without us. We f...

Don’t use essential oils for asthma. Here’s why.
Alright, we need to talk. Those of you who follow my blog know that I don’t shy away from controversial topics and that I don’t have a problem speaking my mind. I try to do it in a respectful, informative, and somewhat humorous way. But I saw something this morning that needs to be addressed, and it’s not funny at all. As I was eating breakfast before work, I saw a link about essential oils posted on a fellow pediatrician/blogger’s Facebook page, where he made some important observations about the author’s claims about medical uses of essential oils. I agree with him completely, but I think the point needs to be ...

We need to reframe alternative medicine in a new way.  Like this.
I’ve written before about various forms of complementary and alternative medicine — most recently about the use of essential oils for serious medical conditions. I’m planning to dive deeper into that topic in an upcoming post. But before I do, I want to take some time to reframe how we think about alternative therapies. And I want to make it clear from the beginning that doctors don’t get paid for prescribing medications; we get paid for taking care of patients. Continue reading ... 4 things this doctor learned after his heart stopped beating
I sometimes think doctors forget what it’s like to be patients. But I’ve been there, and I know how frustrating and scary it can be. I remember one night, I was lying in a hospital bed, resting peacefully. I heard a noise and opened my eyes to a room full of chaos. Nurses everywhere. A crash cart. Someone holding paddles. I tried to speak, but couldn’t. And then I got it out: “Please don’t.” Continue reading ... Your patients are rating you online: How to respond. Manage your online reputation: A social media guide. So what’s the big deal about measles?
In a recent post (“Dear Anti-Vax Parents: We’re Not Mad At You“), I wrote about the critical need for better education and communication between doctors and vaccine-hesitant parents. It was far more popular than I would have imagined, and I appreciate all of you who shared it. And in the spirit of providing reliable information about vaccine-preventable illnesses, I wanted to take the time to write about why measles matters. Continue reading ... If mechanics were paid like doctors
My friend, Trent, is an auto mechanic. When he was growing up, he loved to work on old cars. He rebuilt his first one when he was fourteen — and drove it for 11 years. He loved finding problems and figuring out how to fix them. He never cared about getting rich; his goal was to make a decent living doing something he loves, and his dream had always been to open his own garage. It wasn’t easy, but after seven years of 80-hour workweeks, he took out a loan for $170,000 and was finally able to make his dream a reality. It was a small shop, but it was his. Continue reading ... Dear anti-vax parents: It’s not your fault
Dear anti-vax parents, In the wake of the Disneyland measles outbreak, there’s been a lot of heated talk about parents who choose not to vaccinate their children. It seems like the medical community is now protesting even louder than the anti-vax groups were a couple years ago. But I want to take a moment and apologize for the harsh tone some of us have taken. It’s not personal. We’re not mad at you. Continue reading ... Your patients are rating you online: How to respond. Manage your online reputation: A social media guide. Find out how. Here’s why we need evidence-based pediatrics
There have been countless instances in which the traditional practice of medicine has been disproved when someone actually took the time to perform a study. But who cares if a treatment doesn’t work — why does it really matter? Let me walk you through why it’s important, starting with the Hippocratic oath. Continue reading ... Why is diagnosing ear infections so hard?
Ear infections (or, what we like to call “acute otitis media”) are one of the staple diagnoses of pediatrics. Most kids have at least one before their third birthday.  And most pediatricians see at least one every day by 11. You would think we would always get it right. But I have a confession — we don’t. In fact, children are misdiagnosed and over-treated at an alarming rate. Continue reading ... Your patients are rating you online: How to respond. Manage your online reputation: A social media guide. A 3-year-old taught me to chase my dreams
The day before I began my second year of medical school, I spent the day at the beach with my daughter, who had just celebrated her third birthday. Most of my classmates had spent their “last summer ever” traveling or doing research, but I had chosen to take the time off to make up for some of the family time I had missed over the prior year. My wife picked up a lot of extra hours at her part-time job, and my daughter and I were able to make a lot of memories together. It was a decision I will never regret. Continue reading ... India Holds Bill Gates Accountable For His Vaccine Crimes
Conclusion It is difficult to believe that, despite the mounting evidence outlining the many crimes against humanity that have been committed by the Gates Foundation, GAVI, UNICEF and PATH, Bill Gates is portrayed as a hero among many. However, according to the definition of hero in the Oxford Dictionary, the word hero means: “A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” [12] The dictionary I used said nothing about vaccinating innocent, vulnerable children with untested and unsafe vaccinations, causing them to suffer agonizing, untimely deaths. &nbs...

Solutionist medicine: How the concierge model can reinvent primary care
Call it concierge, call it direct care, boutique, fee-for-service, call it what you will. I call it a solution. As physicians, we’re all solutionists, are we not? With every differential diagnosis, assessment, and plan, we are creating solutions.  In accordance, one does not become a doctor for any reason other than changing the world. Perhaps this change happens one patient at a time, but working toward a greater cause and putting other’s needs before our own are the key components that help to define us as physicians.
