Best Post of November 2013: Nanotechnology joins with cancer genomics in silencing glioblastoma oncogene
The next in our "Best of the Month" series is from November 1, 1013:Gold nanoparticles (yellow) with small interfering RNAs (green) knock down an oncogene in glioblastoma. In a study of mice released this week in Science Nanomedicine, researchers were able to reduce glioblastoma size three- to four-fold by switching off the oncogene Bcl2Like12 by means of nanotechnology-assisted delivery of small interfering RNAs. Normal (linear) nucleic acids cannot get into cells, but these spherical nucleic acids can. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) surrounds a gold nanoparticle like a shell; the nucleic acids are highly oriented, ...

Data Communication Methods in Healthcare: Modernizing Health Data Delivery

That’s been the case for several years and is unlikely to change any time soon. Luckily for most healthcare providers, there is a #1 in KLAS interface engine that can help you overcome interoperability issues with HL7 data. I’ve always been told t...

Thursday Over the River and Through the Woods
I stood watching as she dropped spoonfuls of dumpling dough into the boiling water. By Karen Brenner +Alzheimer's Reading Room “Gosh, you make that look so easy!” My 22 year old self was honestly impressed with the elderly woman’s skill in the kitchen.  Grandma Schadi, my boyfriend Tom’s grandmother, banged the spoon on the side of the large pot and looked at me with her fierce blue eyes,  “It would be easy for you, too, if you had been making dumplings for 65 goddamned years!” You Say Goodbye and We Say Hello:  The Montessori Method for Positive Dementia Care I now own...

Why I Read (+ a Dozen Book Recommendations)
By Leo Babauta In the quiet morning hours, or as I fade off to sleep at night, I cuddle up with a good novel. This book is my world, my quiet time away from the din and discordance of the everyday world, but it’s also a way to explore the world in imaginative new ways. There’s nothing that beats it. I get lost in worlds wholly created by an author, imagined but containing truths about life, incisively commenting about life, reproducing it in beautiful new ways, putting me in the mind of another human being, grabbing my heart and dragging it through the thrill of falling in love or the dull numbness of divor...

Chad Has Departed From Amongst Us…
CHAMBERS COUNTY, Ala. - A Lanett man has died after a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning. The crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Chambers County 299, seven miles south of Lanett. Michael Chadwick Roberts, 40, was killed when the 2002 Chevrolet 1500 he was driving ran off the road and struck a tree. Roberts was not wearing a seat belt and was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he later died from his injuries. Alabama State Troopers say speed was a factor and the circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation. Chad was a very good friend of mine. His death kind of yanked the chair...

4 Reasons U.S. EMR Firms Won’t Try China
If you have something to sell, chances are you’ve thought about selling it in China. With a population of 1.35 billion, it’s become an attractive market for U.S. companies pushing everything from athletic shoes to light trucks to Tide. Given the natural limits of their home market, you’d assume that American EMR firms would eventually size up China’s nascent health IT scene. And it’s likely they have. In a report a few years ago, 100 percent of vendors surveyed told the consulting firm Accenture that they saw global markets as an opportunity in the long term. But health IT doesn’t export quite as easily as...

Chad H Busted? [Update: Confirmed!]
Regular readers may remember the Frost case a few years back. The takeaway from that farce was that the legacy media seems to have little interest in ferreting out actual facts, even when readily available. Such may be the case of Mr Chad Henderson, the (ostensibly) first and only American to successfully buy a new ObamaPlan.Recently, co-blogger Pat sent a spreadsheet with actual rates for each ObamaTax geographic rating area. This morning, he noticed something odd:According to legacy media and Mr Henderson himself, his (unsubsidized) rate is $175. Yet an easily found site which offers plan comparisons yields a very differ...
