The private health care debate in Canada: What ’ s the real issue?
The growing role of private health care in Canada is a hot topic at the moment. Provincial governments are outsourcing elective surgeries to the private sector and are considering or debating the option. Many are against it because they Read more… The private health care debate in Canada: What’s the real issue? originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Updates and an artificial album cover
As regular readers will know, I’ve been running the Sciencebase site since July 1999. Its precursor, Elemental Discoveries, had various homes on the web from December 1995 until that fateful summer. There are almost 4000 articles in the archives, so it’s quite a hefty site for a one-man show. Anyway, having played around with various website options in the last couple of weeks, I’ve finally done a proper spring clean, got rid of some very out-of-date articles and updated others that were worth keeping. I’ve upgraded security and performance stuff so the site should load much faster than ever before...

South Dakota Becomes the Latest State to Legalize Fentanyl Test Strips
Jeffrey A. SingerLast month I reported on state lawmakers ’ growing appreciation for fentanyl test strips as a valuable harm reduction tool to help nonmedical drug users learn if what they are about to consume contains fentanyl. Unfortunately, as Sophia Heimowitz and I explained in a June 2022policy analysis, every state but Alaska prohibits the possession, sale, use, or distribution of drug paraphernalia. And most states consider fentanyl test strips, a product used to test illicit substances, as forbidden drug paraphernalia. In January,Ohio took fentanyl test strips off its illegal drug parapher...

ISFAR Criticizes New Alcohol Guidance Issued by Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction But Fails to Reveal Its Conflicts of Interest with Big Alcohol
Earlier this year, the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction released anew guidance on alcohol use. The guidance was notable for concluding that there is a dose-response relationship between the amount of alcohol one consumes and one ' s risk of disease or injury and therefore, greater amounts of alcohol consumption are associated with poorer health outcomes. In particular, the guidance concluded that drinking no alcohol is safer than drinking a low or moderate amount of alcohol. The International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research (ISFAR) has just published a stingingcritique of the new guidance. The critique es...

Immigrating to the U.S. Is The Main Way To Escape Poverty in Dozens of Countries
David J. BierImmigrating to the United States is the main way to escape poverty in many countries. For about 3  dozen countries, most of their not‐in‐poverty population lives in the United States. Indeed, under the developed world poverty standard of $30 per day, immigration is just about the only way to escape poverty for several nationalities. Since poverty is practically assured in their home c ountries, it should not surprise lawmakers that millions of people would risk everything to immigrate to the United States. In 2019, only about 16 percent of people in the United Stateslived below the $30‐per‐...

Ensuring universal access and quality care: the advantages of a mixed health care system in Canada
Canadian physicians, like many other Canadians, generally support the country’s publicly funded health care system, which is designed to provide universal access to medical care. However, despite its strengths, there are some areas where the public system falls short, and there is growing evidence that a combination of public and private health care could help Read more… Ensuring universal access and quality care: the advantages of a mixed health care system in Canada originally appeared in KevinMD.com.  Courage is a Dead CurrencyIn this country courage is a dead currencyNo longer a legal tenderAccepted in any reputable storesIts coins and banknotes are counterfeit Try slipping a Canadian quarter In the vending machineAnd nothing happens. No guttural rumbleNo churning of inner gearsNothing falls. The slot remains emptyNo matter how hard you pound the red fa çadeThere ’s nothing we can do to stop itSo many of us have exhausted ourselvesSuffering the years to accumulateNow worthless little mounds of green billsLittle nest eggs to draw onWhen the time came to be brave Some hold on to it, hoping it come...

The Iron Law of Prohibition: Introducing “Tranq”
Jeffrey A. SingerTheWall Street Journalreports that the veterinary tranquilizer xylazine, which users calltranq, has been increasingly reported among drug overdose victims, particularly on the East Coast. This very potent tranquilizer has been mixed in with illicit fentanyl which, in turn, is often mixed in with other illegal drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine. The sedative properties of the drug greatly enhance the narcotic effects of opioids. Therefore, the drug cartels have been adding it to opioids to reduce the dose of opioids necessary to create a high. The enhanced potency allows the cartels to smuggle i...
