Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Unraveling Its Impact On Heart And Lungs
Conclusion Navigating the complexities of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) might seem daunting. However, with the right knowledge and proactive approach, it’s possible to manage the condition and maintain a good quality of life. PAH, a unique type of high blood pressure affecting the arteries in the lungs, can put extra strain on the heart. Over time, this can lead to heart failure. The condition’s root cause may vary, from genetic factors to other health issues like heart defects, liver disease, or autoimmune diseases. Remember, sometimes the cause remains unknown, resulting in idiopathic pulmonary ...

Striving to Make Culturally Safe Care The Norm
Healthcare currently places a significant burden on patients and clinicians. Patients must explain their situation repeatedly to strangers who only have a few minutes for them and hope that they believe them enough to help them navigate the healthcare system. Clinicians are working under extreme pressure, and without sufficient infrastructure support. Dr. Alika Lafontaine, the President of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is looking to change that and make culturally safe care the norm for all. Healthcare IT Today had the opportunity to catch up with Dr. Lafontaine at the 2023 Collision Conference held in Toronto. We...

HHS Again Suspends Disbelief: The Medicaid Program Will Ignore the Greatest Health Threat to Medicaid Beneficiaries
BY DAVID INTROCASO In May the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) simultaneously published two proposed Medicaid rules (here and here) intended to improve moreover access and quality.  Both discussed at length the agency’s commitment to “addressing health equity.”  The first sentence in both identified health equity as a Medicaid program priority.  The proposed “ensuring access” rule stated CMS “takes a comprehensive approach to . . . better addressing health equity issues in the Medicaid program.”  CMS went on to state “we are working to advance health equity by designing, implementing,...

The Heat is On
BY KIM BELLARD Attention must be paid: the world is now hotter than it has been in 125,000 years. A week ago, we broke the record for average global temperature. That record was broken the next day.  Later in the week it was broken yet again.  Yeah, I know; weather records are broken all the time, so what’s the big deal?   Well, it is a big deal, and we should all be worried. “It’s not a record to celebrate and it won’t be a record for long,” Friederike Otto, senior lecturer in climate science at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment, told CNN.   Bill Maguire, a professor a...

Psychedelic Science 2023 – Full Conference Review
In June I attended the Psychedelic Science 2023 conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. We were told this was the largest psychedelic-related gathering in the history of the planet, attracting about 12,000 attendees and 500 speakers. In this post I’ll share about my experiences and insights from the conference. Here’s a pic from inside the Bellco Theater where the main keynotes were held. The Colorado Convention Center is sizable, and sessions were spread across many different rooms. Even though I didn’t do extra exercise on this trip, I was typically hitting about 1000 calories ...

Case of the Week 721
Happy American Independence day (July 4th) and a belated Canada day (July 1st)! As an American, this weeks case very appropriately has a lot of red, white, and (purple-ish)blue. The following round objects were seen in a stool specimen on modified acid fast. The patient has had more than 1 week of profuse watery diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. These objects were also highlighted with using calcofluor white fluorescence staining (arrow) along with stool flora. What are these objects? Are they fungus or parasite? (Source: Creepy Dreadful Wonderful Parasites)

Psychedelic Science 2023 – Film Festival Day
I love how friendly and open the vibe is here at Psychedelic Science 2023 in Denver. As we were heading down the elevator in our hotel yesterday, we got to chatting with an enthusiastic attendee on the way out. She told us they had to cap registrations at 11,500 and turn away 70 interested vendors. That doesn’t surprise me. We’re clearly in a wave of surging interest in psychedelics. I’m here because I’m keenly interested to learn more about the potential for using psychedelics for self-development. I’ve only done a few psychedelic journeys so far, and I’d say there’s a 99% chan...

Holy Crap
CNN is trying, really trying, to break through the wall of complacency and denialism.  Yep, the global average atmospheric surface temperature is now the hottest it has been since record keeping began. What worries me more, as it should you, is that sea surface temperatures are even farther off the charts.   Aside from the decimation of marine life, which maybe you don ' t care about, this means ever more powerful storms. In fact, a very unusual tropical cyclone has just formed from a tropical wave coming off the African coast, which normally does not happen until August. (Early season storms tend ...

Air, Air, Everywhere, and Not a Breath Safe to Take
BY KIM BELLARD If you live, as I do, anywhere in the Eastern half of the country, for the past week you’ve probably been thinking about something you’re not used to: wildfires.  Sure, we’ve all been aware of how wildfires routinely plague the West Coast, particularly Oregon and Washington, but it’s novel for the East. So when the smoke from Canadian wildfires deluged cities through the East and Midwest, it came as kind of a shock. For a day last week, New York City supposedly had the worst air quality in the world.  The next day Philadelphia had that dubious distinction.  The air quality index ...

Trade in Real Life: Sorry Charlie (and Senator Warner) for Terrible Tuna Tariffs
Gabriella Beaumont-SmithDuring the pandemic, Senator Mark Warner (D ‑VA) released a video showcasing his tuna melt recipe —complete with a surprising amount of mayonnaise and heated in a microwave (no judgement). The “unhinged” recipe video went viral and three years later,Washingtonian sat down with Senator Warner to have him taste ‐test seven tuna melt sandwiches from DC and Virginia restaurants.Senator Warner ’s tuna‐melt obsession reminded me of a tariff reclassificationcase I  read about last year. Starkist Co. is well‐known for its single‐serve pouches of tuna and argued to the Fede...
