Serological survey and metagenomic discovery of potato viruses in Rwanda and Burundi reveals absence of PVY in Burundi and first report of TRV in potatoes in sub Saharan Africa
Virus Res. 2021 Jun 19:198487. doi: 10.1016/j.virusres.2021.198487. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWorldwide, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the third most important food crop after rice and wheat. Its production is however constrained by several virus diseases. The occurrence and distribution of the economically important viruses and associated insect vectors is however not known for Rwanda and Burundi, where potato is an important food security and income crop. We surveyed 194 potato fields for viruses and insect vectors. Aphids were commonly found infesting farmers' potato fields in contrast to whiteflies. Testing by E...

Supporting trauma recovery, healing, and peacebuilding with the Alternatives to Violence Project.
The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) is a peace education program in prisons, educational institutions and various community settings in over 50 countries. AVP has been shown to lead to positive outcomes in developing nonviolent conflict resolution skills and for supporting trauma recovery, healing, and broader peacebuilding. Some studies of AVP show its effectiveness in promoting prosocial outcomes of self-esteem, empathy and trust, and in reducing anger and stress. Some of these studies used standardized instruments and longitudinal designs. Additional support is found in an even larger body of qualitative studies....

Geographical variation and temporal trend in anemia among children 6-59 months of age in low- and middle-income countries during 2000-2018: forecasting the 2030 SDG target
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of child anemia varied between and within countries. None of the 36 LMICs is likely to eradicate child anemia by 2030.PMID:34103114 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980021002482 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 5976: Delayed Initiation of Breastfeeding and Role of Mode and Place of Childbirth: Evidence from Health Surveys in 58 Low- and Middle- Income Countries (2012 –2017)
In this study, we report the prevalence of delayed breastfeeding initiation from 58 LMICs and investigate the relationship between place and mode of childbirth and delayed breastfeeding initiation in each country. Methods: We analysed data from the most recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) collected between 2012 and 2017 and reported by 2019. The study sample comprised all women who had a live birth in the 24 months preceding the survey. ‘Delayed’ initiation of breastfeeding was defined using WHO recommendations as starting breastfeeding after one hour of birth. We cod...

Double burden of malnutrition among women of reproductive age in 55 low- and middle-income countries: progress achieved and opportunities for meeting the global target
CONCLUSIONS: Although the prevalence of underweight declined, this decline has been superseded by the dramatic increase of overweight. None of the 55 LMICs is likely to eradicate malnutrition in women by 2030.PMID:34040202 | DOI:10.1038/s41430-021-00945-y (Source: Rural Remote Health)
