20 Private Companies to Watch in 2020
MD+DI has taken a hard look at the private medtech sector and developed this list of 20 private companies we will be paying particularly close attention to in the new year. It was not an easy task. There are so many interesting private companies in the industry right now that we started with a much longer list and whittled it down to the 20 companies that stood out most to us. So without further ado, here are the 20 companies that made the cut: 4C Medical is developing the AltaValve, a transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) platform designed to address mitr...

J & amp;J ’s Auris Has Solid Data to Support Monarch
Johnson & Johnson’s Auris Health revealed late-breaking data from the BENEFIT study during the CHEST 2019 Conference in New Orleans last week. BENEFIT is a study of the Monarch Platform, a robotic technology indicated for the use in diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopic procedures. BENEFIT assessed the safety and feasibility of using a robotic system to aid in the diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions 1cm to 5 cm in size. During the study, investigators performed robotic-assisted bronchoscopy using the Monarch Platform on 55 patients across five study sites. The Monarch Platform localized targe...

J & amp;J Talks Up Surgical Robotics Plans
Few medtech sectors are as hot as surgical robotics is right now, so it comes as no surprise that analysts tried to dig for information about Johnson & Johnson's plans for the market during the company's third-quarter earnings call Tuesday. "I couldn't be more bullish around how J&J is going to create value in this space," Ashley McEvoy, EVP and worldwide chairman of Johnson & Johnson's medical device segment, said during the call in response to an analyst's question about surgical robotics. "The goal that we're trying to achieve is really to make medical interventions smarter, less invasive, more personalized,...

Can Radiolucent Foreign Bodies Be Identified?
Discussion Foreign bodies are common problems for young children particularly ages 2-4 years who will mouth many objects and aspirate or swallow them. Children will also place foreign objects in other body orifices such as ears or noses. It is also not uncommon that young girls will inadvertently have toilet paper caught in the vaginal area during hygiene. Many of these foreign bodies may work their way out naturally not causing any problems, or may come to attention later because of chronic problems such as a foul-smell or discharge. Older children may tell adults that they have placed a foreign body in an orifice and thu...

AI Provides a Detailed Road Map for Interventional Lung Procedures
Precise medical imaging and analysis could enable early detection of lung cancer, help determine its exact size and location, and significantly improve diagnosis and treatment. This is usually done in a process called segmentation, which uses computers to identify the boundaries of the lung from surrounding thoracic tissue on CT images. From this process, a detailed 3-D map of the airways may be generated that can help to plan and navigate a bronchoscopy procedure to obtain biopsy samples and to perform other clinical interventions. “Until now, t...
