The Malaysian Medical Association website has been updated
The MMA is the official professional body representing the interests of the medical profession in Malaysia. I am pleased to inform you that the website has been thoroughly revamped and has a modern responsive design which is mobile friendly. There are still some early quirks like the Berita MMA PDF does not download even after signing in but overall it is a good start. The MMA website is linked together with the other Malaysian medical professional associations in our Societies and Associations webpage You can also follow the MMA in their Facebook page The MMA does not have an online forum but for that you can join the pr...

Post-call MVA: a real and present danger
Earlier this month we blogged about Post-call accidents in the light of the tragic deaths of young doctors in motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) the day after calls. The DG did mention it here We also spoke about the various proposals that would be plausible to improve the oncall system. I am due for a meeting with clinical specialists from MOH hospitals in early August 2015, hence this issue can be brought forth for further discussion. Any improvisation to the oncall system needs to be looked at all angles, including the (i) availability of posts, workforce and resources; (ii) service needs; (iii) continuity of patient care,...

Are you a fresh medical graduate?
Recently, one of the members of our Doctors Facebook group, Dobbs FB, herself a fresh graduate asked: Hello all Doctors, What would you recommend us, the newly graduands to do during this long waiting period to be more prepared for our housemanship? I don’t have a clue on what we are expected to know on starting work. I suspect this is a common feeling amongst new graduates. The thought of doing housemanship would be somewhat intimidating. The waiting period for housemanship posting is also getting longer (see New docs may have to wait a year for housemanship) so perhaps the time could be spent getting better prepare...

Feedback: Phytoscience and double stem cells
We just received an email query: Are there any scientific papers to substantiate the claims made by Phytoscience or is this just another MLM scam? Thank you for your email. To our knowledge there are no clinical studies to back up the claims made with regards to any particular disease or condition. It is commonplace in Malaysia to see things allowed on sale as “supplements” but sold with wild unsubstantiated claims on miracle cures (testimonials are fraught with problems and cannot be used as clinical evidence) See the post Be wary of “stem cell” scams for further understanding. Post-call accidents – time to revamp the system
(image credit to FMT) In the last few months we have seen couple of young doctors losing their lives in road traffic accidents post call. In May Dr Nurul Wahida Md Noor died in an accident having been on call the day before. Just 2 days ago, a young anaesthetic MO, Dr Afifah Mohd Ghazi tragically died in an accident also post-call, leaving behind her husband a neurosurgical MO and a 1 year old child. Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families and we can’t imagine the grief they are going through. Medical Officers go “on-call” which is different from going on shift duty that House officers and othe...

Handling abusive patients
(pic via Medscape) Doctors and nurses will on and off encounter “difficult” patients who can turn abusive and even violent. An example is this video which went viral on the social media. Kudos to the doctor who remained calm. It is a sad fact that there are so many people these days who do not know how to behave in a civil manner. Do you know how to handle abusive patients? Does your work place have an SOP for handling abusive patients? Doctors can learn and discuss more in 1) Our Dobbs FB Group (click to join but look for a verification message in your inbox as the group is only for Malaysian doctors) 2) Our...

Moratorium on medical schools continues
The “ban” on new medical schools is supposed to continue for another 5 years, according to this Star report THE ban on new medical programmes is expected to continue for at least another five years. The Health Ministry and the Education Ministry are preparing a memorandum for the Cabinet to continue with the ban, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam. The current ban began in May 2011 and will expire on April 30 next year. The move was to prevent the rapid increase in medical graduates and put the brakes on the rise in the number of housemen. “This time around, we not only want to extend the ban,...

Affordable healthcare with 11MP?
You might have seen this diagram summarising what’s in store for healthcare under the 11MP: What does this really mean for the future of healthcare in Malaysia? Will it really address the current problems including imbalance (too many junior doctors and too few specialists in public sector) and maldistribution (too few doctors in rural areas) of doctors? Will it really alleviate the problem of overcrowded public hospitals? Does it address the problem of the uninsurable such as those with pre-existing illnesses and the elderly? Will it help alleviate the problem of upward spiralling healthcare costs? Doctors can deba...

Query: Asking for altruistic organ donor via Facebook
We had this query via the MMR Facebook page Hello Dr, may I enquire if it’s legal to put on FB to look for altruistic kidney donor in Malaysia ? I have come across in the UK n USA that they put FB site to locate generous people to help either as a family or by previous kidney recipients to help others. My mum is in dire need as she’s in kidney failure In Malaysia, altruistic non-related kidney donors are not allowed without special permission from the UTAC (Unrelated Transplant Approval Committee), and even so this is exceptional. See section 5 of the MOH guidebook on organ transplants which you can view here: ...

APC fees going up by 6 times next year? (II)
Continuation from APC fees going up by 6 times next year? As a recap, the MMC (now a corporatised body which requires funding to run), is proposing a revision of the APC and other fees in the form of a hefty increase of 600% from the current fees. It has come to our attention that there is a template for a letter of appeal circulating amongst doctors and all doctors are encouraged to use this template and write in to the MMC to appeal the proposed increase in APC and other fees. The template of the appeal letter is reproduced for your reference here: This is an embedded Microsoft Office document, powered by Office Online. ...
