What’s the point of having 1Malaysia “clinics”?
From our Dobbs forum, a doctor mentions this incident: Just had a guy with ACS present 2 days after going to 1M clinic with angina. No ECG available, told to ride his motorbike to the hospital! Son said if he knew how deficient it was, he would have gone straight to the klinik kesihatan. and so what’s the point of having 1Malaysia clinics if the clinic Doesn’t have a doctor on site. Only nurses and MAs. Supervision? Monitoring standards? Doesn’t have many tests and medications on site. Doesn’t have transport / ambulance. Doesn’t have any allocation. Staff, meds etc are cannibalised from nearby klinik kesihata...

Internship in Australia (II) – JPA scholars asking for the moon?
There is an ongoing thread in Dobbs, the Malaysian doctors forum Australian-trained doctors ’may be forced overseas’ and basically, Internship (Housemanship) jobs in Australia are relatively scarce compared to the number of medical students being produced. Now JPA scholars studying medicine in Australia are making a plea for “guaranteed Internship jobs” in Australia PETALING JAYA (March 17, 2013): Malaysian medical students on scholarships in Australia are calling on the government to enrol its scholars at institutions that provide internships for international students. Should Shift work for House Officers be abolished?
One may question this after an enlightening letter by a House officer, Dr. Timothy Cheng, who wrote : Revamp current shift system The main issue that gave birth to this shift system was the concern for the well-being of the house officers. With the current shift system, continuity of care of patients is disappearing as house officers are not able to care for one patient longer than 12 hours at a stretch. Most doctors that have gone through the on-call system realise the stress and the workload it brings but are also thankful for the training and skills that it equips them with. As a house officer, I wish we had shifts that...

Teleconsultation to improve healthcare delivery (1)
A recent article in MI suggests that the Health Care sector needs to radically innovate in order to improve the efficiency of healhcare delivery to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The recurring theme in the article seemed to be that some form of Teleconsultation could take the place of traditional office visits in certain circumstances. Taking an hour drive to a clinic or hospital, finding a car park, waiting in the clinic, followed by more queuing for your medicines could be a thing of the past if Teleconsultation could be applied where appropriate. For example, a chronic illness like Hypertension can be largely ...
