SOCSO Health Screening – all is not well
Something is amiss with the health screening programme recently launched by SOCSO (see Star report Two million Socso members eligible for free health screening) PETALING JAYA: About two million private sector employees will be eligible for free medical check-ups from the Social Security Organisation (Socso). Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam is expected to announce the mechanism for the health screening for Socso members today. The move will benefit workers if they contract any non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension, among other things. It will also spur the workers to be more aware of...

Rights of the Dead (the Teoh Beng Hock story)
For those of you who recall, there was some courtroom drama involving pathologists, including the colourful Dr Pornthip from Thailand and I blogged earlier about CSI Thailand vs Malaysia In the end, despite an RCI, I somehow feel there isn’t any closure for the family of TBH from the Malaysian Medical ResourcesRights of the Dead (the Teoh Beng Hock story) (Source: Malaysian Medical Resources)

Separation of dispensing
In recent months there has been a resurgence in media publicity about the issue of Separation of dispensing in Malaysia. An example is this recent article in FMT which deals with the pros and cons of the situation as it pertains to Malaysia. The biggest advantage of a system whereby the doctor prescribes and the pharmacist dispenses is the concept of medication safety. That I think we can all agree as this is the ideal setting: Furthermore, having two healthcare professionals counter-checking on each other (doctors diagnose and prescribe whereas pharmacists counter-check and dispense) is of paramount importance in order to...

Our emergency medical services are still sorely lacking (II)
A rather critical article on our ambulance services in FMT George told FMT that just 48 hours ago, a 67-year-old man from his church near here collapsed after washing the church van and when he called for an ambulance, they delayed by asking too many questions. “They came late but what was even more saddening was that they were ill-prepared and were confused as to what were the normal emergency procedures. “They automatically declared him dead although there was still a pulse and only then decided to rush him to the nearest hospital but he died on the way,” he said. George added that this was no ordinary matter as pe...

Medicine not for the faint hearted
In response to Another houseman “stressed from working long hours”, “Salvatore” wrote to the Star: THE first question you should ask yourself before stepping into the medical world: Why do I choose medicine? Love? Fame? Money? If you choose the latter two, you are absolutely not on the right track, and you might consider changing your profession. Medicine is not for the faint hearted. If you dream of having a glamorous and glitzy life like what you see in the TV series Grey’s Anatomy, quit your job and join the acting career in Hollywood. Seriously, we are talking about commitment. If you don’t have pas...

Another houseman “stressed from working long hours”
He/She wrote to the Star IT has been almost a year since the sad passing of Dr Danny Lee. And from that incident until now, promises were made to ensure the well-being of houseman. I refer to the report “Housemen still being overworked and bullied, sending some into depression” (The Star, April 14, 2012). The Health Ministry (MOH) stated that housemen are supposed to work 60 hours a week with two off days. But the sad reality is, that is not happening. Let me shed some light on a typical houseman’s work day is. Depending on the posting, most of us have to be at the hospital as early as 6.30am (not taking into account...

Doctors Prescribe, Pharmacists Dispense, Patients Suffer
Spotted in LKS’ blog by Product Of The System Real Life Scenario Madam Ong is a 52-year-old lady with a twelve-year-history of hypertension and diabetes. She complained of generalised lethargy, lower limb weakness, swelling and pain. She brought along her cocktail of medications for my scrutiny. Her regular medications included the oral antidiabetics metformin and glicazide and the antihypertensives amlodipine and irbesatan. Madam Ong also had a few episodes of joint pains three months ago for which she had seen two other different doctors. The first doctor suspected rheumatoid arthritis and started her on a short co...
