How Safe are our Children in Nurseries?
This study tested the knowledge of Kinta district nursery teachers on paediatric emergencies. We included 6 common emergencies: choking, poisoning, seizures, drowning, head injuries and simple fractures. We had approached 81 registered nurseries and 42 consented to participate in the study. The most senior teacher from each nursery was approached to participate. They were given 6 different scenarios and were asked to identify the emergency and outline the first aid steps that they would perform to help the child. The results were not encouraging. Remember that this evaluation is based on the most senior/experienced person ...

Contract posts only for junior medical doctors
As we predicted in December last year (The changing landscape of junior doctor jobs in Malaysia IV), junior doctors will no longer start off with permanent jobs, and instead be hired on contract basis only. Malaysiakini reports The Health Ministry will appoint 2,600 medical, dental and pharmacy graduates to serve in the government sector on contractual basis from December. Its minister Dr S Subramaniam said in line with the Budget 2017 announced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak yesterday, the government will introduce a contract system to them as well as to solve the problems of graduates who waited too long for placem...

Full paying private patients – coming your way soon in MOH hospitals
We noticed this circular posted in the forums : It suggests an expansion of “full paying patients” facilities in the MOH and may portend extension of private practice options for MOH specialists, similar already to what is happening in the MOE. This may be one way to retain specialists in public service but it is a double edged sword which has to be managed carefully. Hotly discussed in the DOBBS forums for Malaysian doctors – the pioneer and largest online community for Malaysian doctors. It’s free and instructions on how to join are a https://dobbs.my (Source: Malaysian Medical Resources)

Hard times ahead for the MOH
This recently surfaced in a doctors chat group and is being hotly discussed in our forums It shows that certain laboratory tests in MOH hospitals have been temporarily suspended. The reason is due to lack of funds and it is indeed a perennial problem but if on a wide scale and happening earlier than usual then it is a serious cause for concern. The administrators may be quick to blame “over testing” but while some tests may not be so crucial compared to others but some are pretty basic in modern medicine. One doctor in the forums commented: I am working in a district hospital just an hour away from a tertiary ...

High cost of medical care
Cost of Medicine and medical care has escalated so much over the years. In the past, the medical field is partly charitable to help in healing. Only those who have no financial ambitions will go into the medical field. This includes the manufacture of medicine. Now it is becoming more commercial and the population is forced to spend so much more to receive treatment. However, making some profit is necessary and understandable but it should not become a lucrative trade. In the past, drugs were so cheap that doctors sometimes did not even need to charge patient extra for them and just charge only their humble consultation fe...

Why we will Fail the Fight Against Zika (Pity our Children)
I hope the title has encouraged you to read this article. It is not meant to be pessimistic but a realistic look at our current situation. The opinions expressed here are personal and do not reflect those of the organisation I work with. As we stand today as a nation, with our poor health behaviours, the Zika epidemic that is coming (if not already here) will hit us hard. The following realities or facts are the reason for my statement: 1. The Zika virus is spread mainly by infected Aedes mosquitoes and also by sexual transmission. Our nation is rich with Aedes mosquitoes. 2. The virus is new to us, we are not immune...
