Good afternoon. I am Nathanael Lee, a second year medical student from Perdana University, Malaysia. I am writing this message on behalf of the Malaysian Medical Fellowship (MMF). Every year, the MMF sends teams of medical students headed by doctors to various destinations in Southeast and South Asia to run mobile medical clinics and increase health awareness among the underprivileged.
The MMF is actually a non-profit organization that was founded and run by medical students who work closely with local organizations in order to carry out the MMF’s annual mission work.

Curbs on admitting rights of visiting doctors?

Ministry of Health is also strengthening their enforcement unit and introducing many new rules and regulation for private hospitals and clinics. Recently, we were told that Visiting Consultants in a private hospital cannot admit any inpatients.They are only allowed to see outpatients. For doctors please read the bit about “Doctors who run facilities with annual turnover exceeding RM 500,000 must register. The penalty for not registering is severe. Other medical facilities whose annual turnover does not exceed RM 500,000 may register voluntarily. Once you are register, you are subjected to the terms and conditions of GST legislations. If you do not pay the GST in time to the Customs department, you will be penalized. ”

A big jump in the APC fee is imminent

We heard on the grapevine that the fees for the Annual Practicing Certificate, which is compulsory for Malaysian doctors if they wish to practice in Malaysia, may be hiked 600%. It’s a proposal at this stage but don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Not good news for doctors given the hard economic times but since the MMC has been corporatised, we are not surprised.

Health insurance – reforms needed (IV)
The recent post in Dobbs Bernama Medical News about MTA saying working Malaysians needing more insurance coverage prompts me to make yet another call for Health insurance reforms in this country.
It’s not just working Malaysians but ALL Malaysians who need better insurance coverage. This sector needs to be revamped and regulated. The pressing needs are:
1) Force insurance companies NOT TO DENY Malaysians health insurance coverage on the excuse of having pre-existing illnesses or on the basis of age (i.e. being “too old”)
2) Make health insurance compulsory. If wearing seat belts or having road tax can be...
