Remote support of an external quality assessment program in 10 laboratories in Bhutan, Uganda, and Malawi: Pathologists Overseas experience between 2009 and 2017
CONCLUSIONS: External quality assessment programs can be successfully adopted long term by laboratories in low-resource settings. Active feedback requires significant time and effort but could be especially beneficial for laboratories with poor baseline performance.PMID:38387037 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae009 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)

History of emergency medicine in Bhutan
AbstractEmergency medicine in Bhutan has made significant progress in the past few decades and continues to evolve. In this article, we provide valuable insights into the history of emergency medicine at Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) and in Bhutan and highlight some of the future challenges we face as we move forward to meet the demands of increased patient volume and complexity. Exploring the diversity of < em > CFTR < /em > gene mutations in cystic fibrosis individuals of South Asia
CONCLUSION: In summary, the higher prevalence of consanguinity and the limited availability of CF diagnostic resources in South Asia considerably contribute to the prevalence of genetic disorders like CF. The spectrum of CFTR mutations exhibits noticeable variations within South Asian and other populations. The inclusion of current study-enlisted CFTR gene variants is highly recommended for CF disease genetic testing in South Asia which may aid in achieving a precise diagnosis, enhancing disease management, and discovering drugs for currently untreatable genetic variants. It is also imperative to conduct a comprehensive st...

Feasibility of monitoring Global Breast Cancer Initiative Framework key performance indicators in 21 Asian National Cancer Centers Alliance member countries
This study aims to determine the feasibility of monitoring the status of breast cancer control in the 21 Asian National Cancer Centers Alliance (ANCCA) countries based on the three GBCI Framework key performance indicators (KPIs): stage at diagnosis, time to diagnosis, and treatment completion.METHODS: We reviewed published literature on breast cancer control among 21 ANCCA countries from May to July 2023 to establish data availability and compiled the latest descriptive statistics and sources of the indicators using a standardised data collection form. We performed bivariate Pearson's correlation analysis to measure the s...

Promoting South Asian primary care research and projecting family medicine practitioner-scholars: A matter of critical importance
In conclusion, it will be critical to simultaneously promote grounded theory research that integrates both the family medicine/primary care perspective and the voices of families and address the 'hidden curriculum' that shapes the attitudes and aspirations of young doctors at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Family Physicians treat a variety of patients on a daily basis, in order to improve the quality of care and impact of primary care, it is imperative that the understanding and application of research is enhanced by specialists of this discipline.PMID:38074277 | PMC:PMC10706525 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_15...

HBV prevalence in Sub-continental countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsThe prevalence of HBV among countries in the sub-continent was higher than the global average, but was not as high as some other regions. Countries with greater numbers of displaced persons had higher prevalence of HBV, with a wide range of prevalence between subpopulations likely reflecting differential uptake, and implementation, of vaccination programs.
