Sacubitril - Valsartan, a "New Threshold of Hope" or Hype for Heart Failure?

Drug Repurposing
A reader has sent along the question: "Have any repurposed drugs actually been approved for their new indication?" And initially, I thought, confidently but rather blankly, "Well, certainly, there's. . . and. . .hmm", but then the biggest example hit me: thalidomide. It was, infamously, a sedative and remedy for morning sickness in its original tragic incarnation, but came back into use first for leprosy and then for multiple myeloma. Nebivolol and beta 3 mediated cardioprotection
: Beta 3 adrenoceptor stimulation has been shown to have cardioprotection mediated through nitric oxide synthase which produces nitric oxide. Nebivolol has higher beta 1 selectivity than bisoprolol, carvedilol and bucindolol. Nebivolol is a vasodilatory beta blocker useful in treatment of heart failure in addition to routine uses for beta blockers. The vasodilatory property of nebivolol is probably mediated through stimulation of beta 3 receptors which in turn leads to endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activation resulting in the release of nitric oxide. This improves endothelial function and produces peripheral vas...

CoQ10: Powerful Supplement for Health
Discussion of the Evidence, Scope, Benefits and Risk. Please take a look at this discussion as I’m certain it will help answer some important questions. In addition, some very informative research about coenzyme Q10 can be found in the science section of our website. Coenzyme Q10 is one of the most fundamentally important nutritional supplements I recommend and use in my clinical practice not just for patients with heart disease, but to support brain health and general health as well. We generally recommend 100mg daily, and 200mg daily for those on statins, beta-blockers, or tricyclic antidepressants. The post CoQ10: Pow...
