Radiation-induced parotid leiomyosarcoma
DISCUSSION: This is the first case of radiation-induced leiomyosarcoma and the 12th case of parotid leiomyosarcoma described in the literature. The management associates surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy. Follow-up is by clinical examination, parotid MRI, and annual thoracoabdominal CT scan to search for metastases. Recurrences occur during the first year in 40 to 64% of cases, and distant metastases in 40 to 60% of cases. The 5-year survival rate is between 10 and 30%.PMID:38448265 | DOI:10.1016/j.annpat.2024.02.007 (Source: Annales de Pathologie)

Postoperative Herpes Viral Infections in Neurosurgery - An Experience and Arguments for and against the Plausible Hypotheses
CONCLUSIONS: To date, none of the plausible hypotheses satisfactorily addresses all aspects of viral recrudescence. The etiology may be multi-factorial, and in all cases of unexplained clinical deterioration, herpes infection needs consideration in the differential diagnosis.PMID:38443000 | DOI:10.4103/neuroindia.NI_1599_20 (Source: Herpes)

Unraveling Bell's Palsy: Exploring HSV's Role and Facial Therapy's Impact on Aberrant Reinnervation and Synkinesis
CONCLUSION: This study indicates the potential association between HSV and Bell's Palsy while emphasizing the advantages of facial therapy. The above findings are of great significance; however, additional research is required in order to develop more precise ways of managing Bell's Palsy.SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12070-023-04275-2.PMID:38440655 | PMC:PMC10908708 | DOI:10.1007/s12070-023-04275-2 (Source: Herpes)

Paraganglioma at the cerebellopontine angle: A case report and review of literature
We report the case of a 42-year-old woman presenting with uncontrolled hypertension, right facial palsy, vomiting, and disturbed gait. Diagnosis for PGL was confirmed on postoperative histological examination of the excised mass and correlated with preoperative clinical and radiological findings. Tumor excision was done via a suboccipital craniotomy approach. Our case presents the typically severe features of a jugulotympanic PGL, but most importantly, it highlights the necessity of biochemical diagnosing, thorough probing of the causes of hypertension, and a multi-disciplinary approach in dealing with these tumors. Association between Bell's Palsy and Cardiometabolic Risks: An Age- and Sex-Matched Case-Control Study
CONCLUSION: Screening and monitoring for CMRs, especially hyperglycemia, in every patient presenting with Bell's palsy is essential despite initial normoglycemia, particularly in older-onset cases.PMID:38392630 | DOI:10.3390/jpm14020197 (Source: Herpes)

Immediate lengthening temporalis myoplasty for facial palsy reconstruction following facial nerve inclusive total parotidectomy
Immediate lengthening temporalis myoplasty (Labb é procedure) for immediate dynamic facial reanimation after nerve-inclusive parotidectomy in the elderly population is undocumented in the literature. The aim of this work was to determine whether the Labbé approach could achieve immediate, good functional and static results in elderly patients wi th acquired facial palsy. A retrospective analysis of five patients with parotid malignancies involving the facial nerve who underwent parotidectomy and an immediate Labbé procedure was performed. Task force of the Brazilian Society of Otology - evaluation and management of peripheral facial palsy
CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral facial palsy is a condition of diverse etiology. Treatment should be individualized according to the cause of facial nerve dysfunction, but the literature presents better evidence-based recommendations for systemic corticosteroid therapy.PMID:38377729 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjorl.2023.101374 (Source: Herpes)

“Dual-Innervated Gracilis Free Functional Muscle Transfers in Facial Palsy Patients: Comparing Long-Term Outcomes between One- versus Two-Stage Procedures”
Conclusion Long-term outcomes demonstrate that both one- and two-stage dual-innervated gracilis FFMTs significantly improve excursion, but only two-stage reconstruction significantly improves resting tone. Outpatient care for facial palsy —a survey on patient satisfaction in uni- and interdisciplinary approaches
ConclusionHigh levels of treatment satisfaction can be achieved in both an uni-and interdisciplinary setting. However, multimodal therapy approaches should be applied, considering physical and psychological aspects. In the absence of recovery, surgical interventions must be considered as treatment options. Further studies should continue to investigate potential differences between uni-and interdisciplinary treatment. (Source: Frontiers in Neurology)

Melkersson –Rosenthal syndrome: A case report
Key Clinical MessageMelkersson –Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) remains an enigmatic pathology due to an unknown etiology. Our report, of a 69-year-old man with MRS misdiagnosed for about 40 years, underlines the diagnostic difficulty of this condition. A holistic view of the patient, with a correct medical history investigation, ar e often decisive in the diagnosis of MRS.AbstractMelkersson –Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) is a rare disorder with a still unknown etiology. It is defined by three main symptoms, which are orofacial granulomatosis (OFG), facial palsy, and fissured tongue. It generally presents in young people, during...
