Asparagus freezing tolerance related to rhizome traits
(American Society for Horticultural Science) Three cultivars of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis), 'UC 157,' 'Jersey Giant,' and 'Guelph Millennium,' were tested for winterhardiness in Ontario, Canada. Established crowns were observed over two years and tested for freezing tolerance and storage root and rhizome traits. Results indicated that levels of water, proline, sucrose, and low- and high-molecular-weight fructan in the rhizome were the main determiners of freezing tolerance. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

6 Fast-Food Veggie Burgers That Are Worse Than A Big Mac
When you order a veggie burger, you don't have to worry about whether the beef you're about to eat is antibiotic-free and grass-fed. Still, there's a good chance your favorite bean or mushroom patty is a lot less healthy than you think. And by less healthy, we mean it has more calories, lots more sodium, and more saturated fat than a McDonald's Big Mac. More: 5 Things You Need to Know Before Buying Grass-Fed What?! How's that possible? For starters, the veggies in these patties are often held together with oil or lard, pretty much eradicating the low-cal benefits of a burger made from beans, carrots, zucchini, or oats in...

The Most Important Test Your Doctor Won’t Order
I’ve been getting a lot of mail from readers asking a similar question. Most are like this one from MK in Philadelphia: “I’m going for an annual checkup with my doctor soon. I want to make sure I’m getting the right tests. What’s the number one anti-aging test I should ask my doctor for?” It’s a great question. The problem is your local doctor has probably never even heard of the top anti-aging test I recommend. You see, I want to know what’s going on with you at the cellular level. And that’s why I think it’s essential to measure your telomeres. Telomeres are an important part of human cells that af...

How To Avoid A Thanksgiving Food Coma While Eating What You Want
After eating that enormous Thanksgiving meal, you may want to curl up on the couch (or a stretcher) and moan in belly agony while half-watching football on TV. Experts estimate the average American consumes upwards of 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving, so it's no wonder a lot of us experience pain after the culinary pleasure. But be grateful for this: There are ways to abate the stomach misery without skimping on any of your favorite Thanksgiving foods. A lot of the discomfort will subside with time and patience (and stomach-settling foods on Black Friday), but certain activities and strategies -- like walking after d...

Miraculous Comeback After Stem Cell and PRP Therapy
Are you a baseball fan? Even if you’re not, you have to admire New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon. His comeback has been nothing short of miraculous — thanks to the amazing healing power of stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP utilizes platelets from an athletes’ own blood to rebuild a damaged tendon or cartilage. I began offering PRP therapy at my Sears Institute for Anti-Aging Medicine a few weeks ago and the results I’ve seen from this therapy have just been incredible. Five years ago, Colon was considered washed-up at age 37. His pitching arm was shot. He had severe ligament damage and a tor...

Trigger Warnings: The Good, the Bad, the Pancakes
Seven years ago, I would start at least one day of the week by running to IHOP. IHOP is not at all close to my house. But I really like pancakes, so to afford myself the caloric intake of two pancakes with a tiny smear of butter and a tablespoon of syrup, I would run. Many miles. For two pancakes. Pancakes are a trigger for me -- but only IHOP pancakes. Also In-Shape fitness, the gym I went to every day. My bike. Lululemon running shorts. Scales. Mirrors. Tape measures. The trigger-worthy experiences started well before the pancakes. When I was 9, I was physically and verbally abused by my stepfather, and in the years ...

Tonight is the night. You finally landed reservations at the hottest new dining spot in town, and you've invited a group of friends to join you. How To Drink In College Without Ruining Your Life Or Liver
College is a wonderful time of self-discovery and reading Emily Dickinson on the quad. Also, for some, guzzling Franzia straight from the bag and shotgunning Natty Light in a frat basement. It’s been happening on campuses across the country since way before "Animal House." While plenty of people choose not to drink in college, roughly 3 out of 5 students did as of 2013, according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the National Institutes of Health. The NIAAA found at the time that 39 percent of students between the ages of 18 and 22 reported engaging in binge drinking (5 or m...
