Sorting Out All These Tariffs: Are We Having a Trade War Yet?
Tariffs are making headlines just about every day now, but it ’s often not clear which stories are aboutthreats of tariffs, and which are aboutactual tariffs that will be applied. Back on March 8, President Trump announced that he would impose tariffs on imports ofsteel (25%) andaluminum (10%), but also noted that Canada and Mexico would be exempt and there was going to be a 15 day period to talk about exemptions for other countries (as well as specific product exclusions). Other countries complained that the purported justification for the tariffs, national security, had no basis , and the EUthreatened retaliatory tar...

New Human Freedom Index: A Decline in Global Freedom
The newHuman Freedom Index is out today. For a third year, the annual report —published by Cato, the Fraser Institute in Canada, and the Liberales Institut in Germany—paints a broad picture of personal, civil and economic freedom in the world. It uses 79 indicators in 12 areas ranging from freedom of religion to freedom to trade. Here are some highlights. The 1000th Thread!
This is the 1000th presentation to my bioethics blog since starting on Google Blogspot.com in 2004.There has been many topics covered. Though comments by the visitors has always been encouraged and, since as a "discussion blog", comments leading to discussions I have felt was the definitive function here. Virtually none of the thread topics have gone unread and most have had some commentary, some with mainly particularly strong and emphatic opinions http://bioethicsdiscussion.blogspot.com/2013/01/should-pathologists-be-physicians.html, some with extensive up to 12 years long continued discussion http://bioethicsdiscussion....

One in a Billion Chance a Year of Being Killed by a Chain Immigrant in a Terror Attack
Yesterday, Bangladesh-born  Akayed Ullah attempted a suicide bombing in New York City.  Fortunately, he only injured a few people and severely burned his own torso.  Ullah entered the United States on an F4 green card for the brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens. Some are using Ullah ’s failed terrorist attack to call for further restricting family-based immigration and the green card lottery.  After hearing about the failed terrorist attack, President Trump argued that “Today’s terror suspect entered our country through extended-family chain migration, which is incompatible with national security … Congres...

The Macro View – Health, Financial And Political News Relevant To E-Health And The Health Sector In General.
November 30, 2017 Edition.Overseas, in the week this is published we will get a good idea if Trump is going to get the Tax Legislation he wants through. There are many differences between the House and Senate versions and it will be interesting to see if they can be reconciled. Current betting is that something will get through but won ’t look much like what the President was hoping for!In Europe the Irish Government has almost collapsed so that is going to complexify Brexit negotiations! Germany is also still without a Government! In Asia the problems in Myanmar continue and elsewhere the Argentinians seems to have lost ...

23 and BS
If you are unfortunate enough to watch television, you have no doubt seen ads for a company that will analyze your DNA and tell you where your ancestors come from.A sample ad consists of a woman saying, " I used to think I was Hispanic. But when I got my results back, I discovered that I ' meverything!I have ancestors from all over the world. " A pie chart displays behind her showing percentages of ancestry from various places. " Now I know I ' m not Hispanic after all. When they ask my ethnicity, I check ' other ' . "Whoa. Talk about people unclear on the concept. She is the very paradigm of Hispanic, which means people w...

You don ’t have to climb a mountain for a “peak experience” in nature to be life-changing
By Emma Young We’re all familiar with the idea that nature can be psychologically uplifting. But for some people, a single, brief “peak experience” in a natural setting, lasting mere seconds or minutes, changes their view of themselves or their relationships with others so profoundly that their lives are positively transformed as a result. A new study in the Journal of Humanistic Psychology explores exactly how and why this happens. The researchers LIa Naor and Ofra Mayseless at the University of Haifa, Israel, advertised on the internet for people who felt they’d had a transformative experience in nature to get in...

The World ’s Most – And Least – Miserable Countries in 2016
In what follows, I update my annual Misery Index calculations. A Misery Index was first constructed by economist Art Okun as a way to provide President Lyndon Johnson with a snapshot of the economy.  The original Misery Index was just a simple sum of a nation ’s annual inflation rate and its unemployment rate. The Misery Index has been modified several times, first by Robert Barro of Harvard and then by myself. My modified Misery Index is the sum of the unemployment, inflation, and bank lending rates, minus the percentage change in real GDP per capita. A higher Misery Index score reflects higher levels of “misery,” ...

Do you really need 3 kinds of conditioner? Episode 142
This study involved having 18 young adults evaluate the attractiveness and age of 8 female faces. The images varied in terms of natural aging features like lines and wrinkles. While evaluating the images the subjects were exposed to different odors, one pleasant (rose oil) and one unpleasant (fish oil). Then the subjects rated the age of the face in the photo, the attractiveness and the pleasantness of the odor. The result was that odor pleasantness directly influenced rating of facial attractiveness suggesting that odor and visual cues independently influence judgements. One downside to using pleasant odors is that visual...
