I am one of those women who left academic medicine
Since before the COVID-19 pandemic, anecdotal evidence and small survey-based studies show that women were leaving academic medicine in droves and were not returning— up to 40 percent of women leave medicine or go to a part-time position within six years of finishing residency. One landmark study pointed out the rarity of women in leadership Read more… I am one of those women who left academic medicine originally appeared in KevinMD.com. No, the Poor Don ’ t Always Have to Be With Us
BY KIM BELLARD OK, for you amateur (or professional) epidemiologists among us: what are the leading causes of death in the U.S.?  Let’s see, most of us would probably cite heart disease and cancer.  After that, we might guess smoking, obesity, or, in recent years, COVID.  But a new study has a surprising contender: poverty.    It’s the kind of thing you might expect to find in developing countries, not in the world’s leading economy, the most prosperous country in the world. But amidst all that prosperity, the U.S. has the highest rates of poverty among developed countries, which accounts in no small part ...

These coursesaddress the challenges faced by A&P students and improve theirreadiness and comprehension.  In this first of two episodes, we focus on the pre-A&P course. It focuses on filling subject knowledge gaps with 10 modules and cumulative tests. Student surveys and studies show its effectiveness inachieving higher grades in the A&P 1 course. Implementing these nontraditional coursesrequires collaboration and support from advisors and faculty members. Together, we aim tobridge the gap in subject pre...

In conclusion, the longevity-associated genotype of FLT1 may confer increased lifespan by protecting against mortality risk posed by hypertension. We suggest that FLT1 expression in individuals with longevity genotype boosts vascular endothelial resilience mechanisms to counteract hypertension-related stress in vital organs and tissues. Unlocking business acumen: Why doctors must take charge of their careers
Lack of business education among doctors is a topic I’ve been considering as I decide which direction to take in my career. I wholeheartedly agree with the lack of physician engagement in the business of medicine is troublesome. However, blaming academia’s lack of financial education as an external force for the profession’s lack of financial Read more… Unlocking business acumen: Why doctors must take charge of their careers originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Recombinant Klotho Treatment Improves Cognitive Function in Old Rhesus Macaques
Klotho is one of the few genuinely longevity-associated genes, in that greater than normal expression increases life span in mice, while lower than normal expression shortens life span in mice. In humans, greater levels of circulating soluble klotho correlate with greater longevity. Klotho is thought to operate in the kidneys, in some way that is protective against the mechanisms of age-related decline, but there is a great deal of evidence for greater circulating klotho to improve cognitive function. At the same time, it seems unclear as to whether klotho is actually doing anything in the brain; it may be that the benefit...

Let me set the record straight
This study of parent observations and interpretations serves to develop the hypotheses that rapid-onset gender dysphoria is a phenomenon and that social influences, parent-child conflict, and maladaptive coping mechanisms may be contributing factors for some individuals. Rapid-onset gender dysphoria (ROGD) is not a formal mental health diagnosis at this time. This report did not collect data from the adolescents and young adults (AYAs) or clinicians and therefore does not validate the phenomenon. Additional research that includes AYAs, along with consensus among experts in the field, will be needed to determine if ...

Potentially Interesting Longevity-Related Conferences for the Remainder of 2023
A number of organizations organize yearly conferences relevant to both participants in the longevity industry and its surrounding community, and those who want to participate, whether as investors, researchers, advocates, entrepreneurs, or employees of biotech startups. Here I'll point out a few events that may be of interest to those who want to become more involved in this field. Come out to attend some of the better conferences! What happens to FFR after stenting ?
A simple question with mammoth repercussions in the revascularization world. How was the question ? Was it difficult ? Don’t worry, it wouldn’t be the same even for elite cardiology experts worldwide. It is not a Himalayan task, though, to find an answer. All it requires is a simple FFR run through pre and post PCI (Now RFR, iFR, QFR). Surprisingly, very few inquisitive minds wanted to do this. I can find 5 related papers. The fifth one is very specific: REPEAT-FFR study. Go through at least that one paper and find the answer yourself. Cardiology fellows it is worth reading about this important stud...

Defining the Longevity Industry to Exclude Those Who Circumvent Rigorous Clinical Trials
As the longevity industry grows, the need for investment grows with it. A big leap in funding is needed to move from preclinical to clinical development, and ever more companies are arriving at the point of making that transition. Raising the few million dollars in seed funding needed for a small lab team to produce proof of principle studies to demonstrate that a novel therapy works in mice is a very different prospect in comparison to raising tens of millions of dollars to conduct GMP manufacturing and phase II clinical trials in humans, never mind the even larger sums needed for later phase III trials. The types of inve...
