The Anesthesiology Physician-Scientist Pipeline: Current Status and Recommendations for Future Growth-An Initiative of the Anesthesia Research Council
Anesth Analg. 2023 Oct 1;137(4):728-742. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006520. Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTThe limited number and diversity of resident physicians pursuing careers as physician-scientists in medicine has been a concern for many decades. The Anesthesia Research Council aimed to address the status of the anesthesiology physician-scientist pipeline, benchmarked against other medical specialties, and to develop strategic recommendations to sustain and expand the number and diversity of anesthesiology physician-scientists. The working group analyzed data from the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Nationa...

Cardiology training in the USA
Introduction Modern medical education in the USA is a competitive, highly regulated and highly regimented process.1 In order to specialise in cardiovascular diseases, aspiring cardiologists must at minimum complete a college (bachelor’s) degree, medical school (MD or DO), internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship. The required length of training in cardiology has significantly increased in parallel with the proliferation of subspecialties and rapid expansion of medical knowledge,2 such that the typical minimum length of training following high school graduation is now 14 years (figure 1). First-generation physicians: The pursuit of academic surgery
In order to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients, the healthcare workforce must be diverse, empathetic, and representative of the nation's population. Diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts are thus tasked with amplifying and creating space for the perspective of physicians from historically underrepresented backgrounds, including first-generation (FG) students. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) defines FG medical students as applicants whose parents have not earned an associate or higher degree in the United States. Have each other's back: A peer mentorship framework for ethnically underrepresented in medicine (URiM) residents
With an increasingly diverse patient population, efforts to enhance the ethnic and racial representation of the surgeon workforce are critically important. Unfortunately, ethnic representation in academic surgery is regressively disproportionate with Black and Latino physicians representing 4.7% and 3.1% of surgical residents and 2.9% and 5.6% of surgical faculty, respectively.1 Recognizing that not all US minority groups are underrepresented in the physician workforce, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) coined the terminology ethnically underrepresented in medicine (URiM), amplifying the lack of physician...

U.S. Primary Care Provider Needs: An Analysis of Workforce Projections and Policy Implications
Policy Polit Nurs Pract. 2023 Aug 21:15271544231190606. doi: 10.1177/15271544231190606. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe primary care (PC) physician workforce has consistently been projected as requiring additional numbers to meet the needs of the U.S. The Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) has reported the PC nurse practitioner (NP) workforce to be 90,000 NPs more than required to meet the PC needs of the U.S. With both clinician types contributing to the PC workforce in the country, it is difficult to understand such an oversupply of NPs with continued deficit in PC physicians. The purpose of this study ...
