“A patient's doctor”- A high school freshman's reflection on the field of breast imaging
Despite an increasing focus on gender diversity in radiology the underrepresentation of women in radiology has not significantly improved over the last two decades, with women continuing to representing just a quarter of the radiology workforce since 2007 (AAMC, 20191). Although multifactorial, lack of perceived patient interaction in the field has been reported to be one of the main deterring factors in why women chose not to pursue radiology (Arleo et al., 2016; Fielding et al., 20072,3). Limitations of the Medical Specialty Preference Inventory (MSPI) for Radiation Oncology
The Medical Specialty Preference Inventory (MSPI), offered through the Association of American Medical Colleges Careers in Medicine website, is a widely utilized tool to aid medical students in career decision-making. Students who complete the MSPI are asked to rate 150 items on a 7-point Likert-type scale in terms of their desirability to the respondent as part of their future medical practice. The generated output of the MSPI gives a percent-probability that the student will enter each of 19 evaluated specialties that participate in the main residency match. How Did Black and Hispanic Orthopaedic Applicants and Residents Compare to General Surgery Between 2015 and 2022?
CONCLUSION: We found low acceptance of Black residents compared with the higher recruitment of Black applicants, as well as overall low proportions of Black and Hispanic applicants and residents. Future studies might explore the factors contributing to the higher acceptances of Hispanic orthopaedic residents than Black orthopaedic residents.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: We recommend that more emphasis should be placed on increasing Black and Hispanic representation at the department level to ensure cultural considerations remain at the forefront of applicant recruitment. Internal or external reviews of residency selection processes ...

A clinical antiracism curriculum for third ‐year medical students to bring antiracist principles to the bedside
AbstractAs medical educators, we have a responsibility to ensure our trainees are exposed to curricula dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), as illustrated by the Association of American Medical Colleges' recently released DEI Competencies Across the Curriculum. We designed and implemented a curriculum, Social Justice Rounds (SJR), that incorporates teaching on these topics directly into inpatient clinical work. SJR are brief team-based discussions facilitated by Pediatric Hospital Medicine faculty that focus on racism in medicine and other forms of discrimination experienced by patients and the effect it ha...

Underfunding for Research Training and Career Development: The Impact on Family Medicine Research
CONCLUSIONS: Comparatively low rates for family medicine awards for RT and RCD plausibly contribute to poor federal funding for family medicine research, underscoring the need to bolster the research career pathway in family medicine.PMID:38506701 | DOI:10.22454/FamMed.2024.453278 (Source: Famly Medicine)
