Delay and effort-based discounting, and the role of bodily awareness, in people experiencing long-term pain: A cross-sectional study

Our physiological and emotional state influences the way we behave and make decisions.23 Pain is an unpleasant experience involving both physiological and emotional components, making its presence likely to influence decision-making. Indeed, people with chronic pain show increased risk-taking compared with pain-free controls, both in laboratory studies,6,25,57 and in decision-making related to health, including elevated rates of cigarette smoking63 and alcohol use.33
