Comment on: The Effect of Sleeve Ablation of Gastric Mucosa on Body Weight and Glucose Homeostasis in the Rat.

As a surgical specialty we continue to move away from the inaccurate historical explanations for why metabolic and bariatric surgery has such profound effects on body weight – namely the “malabsorptive and restrictive” explanations. There is a plethora of research [e.g. 1–4] into the putative mechanisms of these operations, which includes alteration of nutrient absorption, changes in brain signaling, bile acid physiology, and organ to organ communication that cu lminate in marked long term weight loss.
