Endogenous ω-3 fatty acids in Fat-1 mice attenuated depression-like behaviors, spatial memory impairment and relevant changes induced by olfactory bulbectomy

The etiology of depression is heterogeneous and multifactorial. Dysfunction of brain limbic system may play a crucial role in the onset and development of depression. Olfactory bulbectomy (OB)-induced depression model is based the lesion of the limbic system, such as frontal cortex, amygdala and hippocampus, which can induce serious of behavioral, neuroendocrine, neurotransmitter and immune changes. For example, rodent OB model exhibits hyperactivity in novel or stressful environments, anhedonic, memory impairment [1-3], hypercortisonism, and deficiency of serotonin and noradrenaline systems, which are similar to those observed in depressed patients [4].
