The Incidence, Clinical Characteristics, and Outcomes of Pneumothorax in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients: A Systematic Review

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus is known to cause coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), resulting in the ongoing global pandemic1. COVID-19 presents with a wide variety of respiratory complications that range from self-limiting upper respiratory tract infection to acute respiratory failure from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and pleural diseases such as pleural effusion and pneumothorax.2 Pneumothorax is a common complication of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) in critically ill patients, with reported incidence up to 15%.
