Insulin resistance: still an underestimated factor in polycystic ovary syndrome?

While in the past polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was considered mainly a reproductive disorder, defined by oligoovulation or anovulation, hyperandrogenism (HA), and polycystic ovarian morphology, in the last years it has become more evident that PCOS extends far beyond menstrual or reproductive problems. In fact, it has been shown to be associated with profound metabolic abnormalities, leading to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases in later years of life (1).
