US-Mexico asthma study examines hygiene hypothesis amid pandemic

(University of Arizona Health Sciences) The Binational Early Asthma and Microbiome Study will recruit 500 children - 250 in Tucson, Arizona, and 250 in Nogales, Mexico - before mothers give birth. Mothers will be evaluated while pregnant and children followed from birth to age 5 on how the “ hygiene hypothesis ” affects their risk of asthma. This cross-border investigation, funded by a $15.3 million federal grant, is led by Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center researchers at the University of Arizona Health Sciences.
