Listening for Thrombosis
The introduction of the left-ventricular assist device (LVAD) has fundamentally advanced the management of heart failure (HF), as LVADs provide either a destination form of treatment or a bridge to eventual heart transplantation or the recovery from HF. A disastrous complication that can profoundly compromise the functionality of the LVAD, as for any extracorporeal device, is thrombosis. In the current issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Boilson et al describe a noninvasive approach for early detection of such events in the LVAD population.
