Thyroid hormone status in patients with impaired kidney function

ConclusionIn a large cohort of inpatients, the prevalence of low-T3 syndrome was 2.5 times higher in patients with advanced kidney disease, compared to those with normal kidney function. In advanced CKD, both eGFR and proteinuria were strongly correlated with thyroid hormones. Therefore, close screening of the “thyroid profile” in patients with any stage of CKD, especially to those with proteinuria, might be warranted.
