Placebo Response Reduction and Accurate Pain Reporting Training Reduces Placebo Responses in a Clinical Trial on Chronic Low Back Pain: Results From a Comparison to the Literature

Discussion: These findings are consistent with results from other studies showing that neutralizing subject and study staff expectations of therapeutic benefit can decrease the placebo response in clinical trials. The results of this study suggest training participants and staff to improve pain reporting accuracy, neutralize expectations, and decrease external cues that may bias participants’ pain ratings in clinical trials may effectively decrease the placebo response leading to increased assay sensitivity.
