Qualitative Analysis of a Supervised Exercise Program for Older Veterans with PTSD

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common health conditions among U.S. veterans1 and has profound negative effects on health,2 particlularly among older adults due to its chronicity.3 The adverse sequelae of PTSD span both physical health (e.g., obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension)2 –4 and mental health (comorbid depression, anxiety, mental health quality of life)5 domains. In addition, PTSD is associated with less engagement in health promoting behaviors such as physical activity,6,7 which is troubling given the health benefits observed with regular exercise, including impro ved PTSD symptoms in veterans.
