Early migration of stemless and stemmed humeral components after total shoulder arthroplasty for osteoarthritis —study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

DiscussionTo our knowledge, RSA has never been used to access migration of a stemmed or a stemless humeral component nor has the stemmed and the stemless humeral component been compared with regard to pain relief and shoulder function in a randomized clinical trial. Today, the two designs are considered equal in the treatment of osteoarthritis. The study will provide surgeons and patients with information about shoulder arthroplasty for osteoarthritis and assist them in decision-making.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.govNCT04105478. The majority of our knowledge of chronic pain in the general population comes from self-report studies. During the last three decades most of these population-based surveys have found that 20% to 35% of the general population suffer from chronic pain [4,6,10,22,23,25,27]. Globally, it is estimated that low back pain, migraine, neck pain, other musculoskeletal disorders, osteoarthritis, and tension type headache are rank numbered 1, 2, 6, 7, 12, and 28 with respect to causes of years lived with disability and that respectively 650, 850, 350, 250, 240, and 1560 million people worldwide suffer from these pain-related disorders [28].

This study aimed to investigate the intermediate-term efficacy of non-osteotomy approaches in the treatment of early to intermediate stage ankle osteoarthritis. Forty-two patients received treatment for early to intermediate stage ankle osteoarthritis with non-osteotomy approaches were reviewed. The surgical satisfaction was evaluated at 1 year after surgery and the last follow-up period; the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scale and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were employed for the evaluation of function and pain, respectively, and the stage of ankle osteoarthritis was determined.

Tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis (TTCA) is an increasingly used method of stiffening the ankle and subtalar joints in advanced degenerative deformities. The study group consisted of 19 men who were subjected to intramedullary and intra-osseous arthrodesis using an intramedullary nail. The average age of patients was 46 (range 19 to 68) years. The main indication for surgical treatment was post-traumatic arthrosis 11 (58%). In the studied group, clinical condition was assessed using the AOFAS classification, quality of life using the SF-12 scale, and assessment of pain intensity using the VAS scale.
