Analysis of metabolomics profile in hypothyroid patients before and after thyroid hormone replacement

ConclusionThese results suggest that metabolic changes in the patients with hypothyroidism may persist after normalization of serum levels of FT3, FT4, and TSH, which currently represent the gold standard in laboratory testing for diagnosis and evaluation of thyroid pathology. So, the metabolomics approach may contribute to integrate classical hormone assays and to determine the euthyroid status achievement with greater efficacy.

CONCLUSIONS: DI is frequent in Sjögrenser patients, mainly in the form of autoimmune disorders, and seem to be associated with a more severe phenotype. Our results suggest that DI should be evaluated in pSS patients, especially those with more severe disease. PMID: 33025900 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

This study examined the contribution of long-term use of Lipiodol capsules, as a supplement to iodized salt to the control of iodine deficiency disorders among women in Xinjiang of China. A total of 1220 women (women of childbearing age who were neither pregnant nor lactating, pregnant women, and lactating women) across Kashgar, Aksu, Turpan, and Yili Prefectures were surveyed in 2017. Lipiodol capsules were administered twice yearly in Kashgar and once yearly in Aksu and Turpan, but not in Yili. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC), FT3, FT4, TgAb, TPOAb, and thyroid volume values were assessed. All the women in the four ar...

SummaryHemiagenesis of the thyroid gland (THA) represents a  rare congenital anomaly. It is characterized by the absence of one thyroid lobe, and sometimes the isthmus as well. It can occur with all kinds of other thyroid pathologies that may be present in the remaining thyroid lobe. A case of a 21-year-old male patient is presented; he sought a thyroid consultation because of hair loss, fatigue, and problems concentrating, thus raising the suspicion of hypothyroidism. Thyroid function was normal, but sonography of the thyroid gland revealed THA of the left lobe and the isthmus. The current knowledge co...

This study aimed to elucidate clinical courses and prognosis of P-THY in comparison with T-THY in the aspect of thyroid immunity and HLA. Patients with P-THY (n = 15) that required L-T4 supplemental therapy for hypothyroidism for more than 3 months, and patients with T-THY who required no therapy or therapy within 1 month were enrolled in the study. Lower-value of TSH, higher-value of FT4, and lower value of TSH/FT4 were thought to be predictive markers to estimate P-THY. In addition, anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) levels were significantly higher in patients with P-THY than those in patients with T-THY. HLA-DPA1*01:03...

AbstractIn recent years, the frequency of infections due to saprophytic fungi has increased.Cryptococcus laurentii, recently classified asPapiliotrema laurentii, is responsible for fungemia, meningitis, and superficial infections. Here, we report the first case of cutaneousPapiliotrema (Cryptococcus)laurentii infection in a 23-year-old Caucasian woman affected by an autoimmune thyroiditis with hypothyroidism. Impairments of the immune system are often associated with unusual fungal infections, which cannot be neglected. The isolate strain was susceptible to Amphotericin B while resistant to fluconazole, itraconazole, voric...

CONCLUSION: There were significant differences in the oral and intestinal microbiota between pregnant women with hypothyroidism and normal pregnant women. The changes of microbiota is one of the factors influencing the occurrence and development of hypothyroidism during pregnancy. PMID: 33017219 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

We enjoyed reading the recent paper by Chen and colleagues entitled, “Risk of Parkinson's disease (PD) in patients with hypothyroidism: A nationwide population-based cohort study” [1]. The authors are to be congratulated for this informative prospective study demonstrating that patients with hypothyroidism have an increased risk of developing PD [1]. Although thi s study is unique in its approach, we would like to add some thoughts that may open the debate about the possible cardiovascular repercussions mediated by hypothyroidism in patients with PD and even trigger sudden fatal events in these individuals.
