Rates of depression and anxiety in Italian patients with cystic fibrosis and parent caregivers: Implementation of the mental health guidelines

There is growing evidence that individuals with serious, chronic conditions are at higher risk for symptoms of depression and anxiety. In two recent systematic reviews of psychological distress in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Type I diabetes, elevated rates of depressive and anxious symptoms were reported by a large percentage of the population. For those with IBD, approximately 22% had elevated symptoms of depression and 35% reported elevated symptoms of anxiety [1]. These rates are similar to those reported by individuals with Type I diabetes, with 30% screening elevated on depression and 32% screening in the elevated range for anxiety [2].
