Genetic variants in FADS1 and ELOVL2 increase level of arachidonic acid and the risk of Alzheimer's disease in the Tunisian population

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are an important component of the brain. These molecules, especially long-chain PUFAs (C>20) (LC-PUFAs), are found as constituents of the cell membrane. Besides, they can affect cognitive development and modulate several processes within the brain, such as neuroinflammation [1-3]. In neuronal cells, these molecules can modulate inflammation through pro-inflammatory and/or anti-inflammatory mediators such as eicosanoids and specialized pro-resolving mediators [3, 4].
