Prevalence of Disaccharidase Deficiency in Adults With Unexplained Gastrointestinal Symptoms.

Conclusions: Isolated disaccharidase deficiency occurs in adults, usually lactase and rarely maltase. Pandisaccharidase deficiency is rare. Baseline symptoms or its severity did not predict enzyme deficiency. LBT has good specificity and diagnostic agreement with lactase assay and may be more cost-effective. In adults with refractory gastrointestinal symptoms, disaccharidase testing detects enzyme deficiency in approximately one-half of patients and can aid diagnosis and management.
