A Case Report: Mixed Meningoencephalitis by: Aspergillus fumigatus: and a Pigmented Mold in a Young Woman With No Evident Immunosuppression

Fungal meningitis is often a fatal condition, particularly in immunosuppressed patients. Herein, we describe the case of a previously healthy young woman with a history of epidural anesthesia for a cesarean delivery in another hospital 3 months prior. The patient complained of chronic migraine-like headache before admission to our center. After 5 weeks, a cerebrospinal fluid culture in Sabouraud agar grew a mold, later identified as Aspergillus fumigatus. The patient died after 114 days of hospitalization despite being administered with voriconazole for 45 days. At autopsy, a pigmented mold consistent with phaeohyphomycosis was found, suggesting an unusual case of a mixed mold infection.
