Frequencies of musculoskeletal symptoms and disorders in the population-based German National Cohort (GNC).

CONCLUSION: Musculoskeletal disorders and symptoms occur frequently. The burden of complaints and diagnoses is comparable to previous population-based surveys. PMID: 32189044 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

In this study, we found that senescent chondrocytes isolated from OA patients secrete more EVs compared with nonsenescent chondrocytes. These EVs inhibit cartilage ECM deposition by healthy chondrocytes and can induce a senescent state in nearby cells. We profiled the miR and protein content of EVs isolated from the synovial fluid of OA joints from mice with SnCs. After treatment with a molecule to remove SnCs, termed a senolytic, the composition of EV-associated miR and protein was markedly altered. The senolytic reduced OA development and enhanced chondrogenesis, and these were attributable to several specific differenti...

This study shows that funding research into these conditions not only delivers direct health benefits to patients, it is also hugely beneficial to the UK economy, helping to lay the foundations for a healthier, wealthier future.“This report supports previous findings that investing in biomedical research delivers an annual return of about 25 pence per pound in perpetuity, offering an indisputable economic benefit. This new figure ably illustrates why scientific research has earnt its place at the heart of a modern industrial strategy.”Dr Louise Wood, Director of Science, Research and Evidence, Department of Hea...

Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are highly conserved molecules that regulate protein levels post‐transcriptionally. Aberrant miRNA expression presents in various musculoskeletal disorders, such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The expression levels of miRNAs are characterized by endogenous properties and tissue specificity. This raises the possibility that miRNAs could serve as useful clinical biomarkers in the diagnosis of certain diseases. Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is one of the major causes of back pain, and a process characterized by a cascade of molecular, cellular, biochemical and ...

Abstract 18F-sodium fluoride (NaF) as an imaging tracer portrays calcium metabolic activity either in the osseous structures or in soft tissue. Currently, clinical use of NaF-PET is confined to detecting metastasis to the bone, but this approach reveals indirect evidence for disease activity and will have limited use in the future in favor of more direct approaches that visualize cancer cells in the read marrow where they reside. This has proven to be the case with FDG-PET imaging in most cancers. However, a variety of studies support the application of NaF-PET to assess benign osseous diseases. In ...
