Ending tuberculosis by 2030 —Pipe dream or reality?

The world has pledged to end the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic by 2030. If one was an astronomer, the stars would seem to be aligning well. In 2018, at the first ever United Nations High Level Meeting (UNHLM) on TB, world leaders committed to a raft of measures to end TB, including successfully treating 40 million people with TB and providing TB preventive treatment to 30 million other people between 2018 and 2022 (United Nations Political Declaration on the Fight Against Tuberculosis, 2019). In 2019, the Global Fund achieved its replenishment target of USD$14 billion, which experts estimated would provide sufficient resources to support efforts to end TB, malaria, and HIV/AIDS by 2030 (Usher, 2019).
