Clinical update: The important role of dual kidney function testing (ACR and eGFR) in primary care: Identification of risk and management in type 2 diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition associated with increased morbidity and mortality [1], primarily due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) [2 –6]. Diabetes is also a key risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD), such as diabetic nephropathy, also known as diabetic kidney disease (DKD), and affects people with both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes (T2D) [7,8]. Although short-term hyperglycaemia does not result in serious clinical complications, extended hyperglycaemia, a hallmark of diabetes, is a major causative factor in initiating kidney damage [9].
