Hepatic cirrhosis is a potential severe complication of chronic heart failure and has major implications on treatment options. In general, patients with cirrhosis are considered ineligible for isolated cardiac transplantation. Therefore, proper diagnosis of cirrhosis is paramount. The aim of this retrospective study is to explore the diagnostic value of abdominal ultrasound, hepatosplenic scan and abdominal computed tomography scan (CT scan) for liver disease secondary to advanced heart failure.

A 69-year-old man presented with acute onset shortness of breath. He had a history of coronary artery bypass grafting 40 years prior. Chest x-ray showed an 8-cm mass that was inseparable from the right cardiac margin (Figure  1). Chest computed tomography scan was performed and was suspicous for a bypass graft aneurysm.

Abstract Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is performed by a physician at the bedside and is standard practice in obstetric, emergency, and musculoskeletal medicine. When compared with formal sonography, POCUS is equivalent in screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm and as accurate in diagnosing deep venous thrombosis. POCUS has high accuracy for diagnosing pneumonia and detecting acute decompensated heart failure but is less accurate than computed tomography for identifying pulmonary embolism. POCUS confirmation of intrauterine pregnancy rules out an ectopic pregnancy. In the third trimester of high-risk preg...

The objective of this study was to assess the incremental value of myocardial wall motion and thickening compared with perfusion alone obtained from gated single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in diagnosing myocardial viability in patients with ischemic heart failure.MethodsEighty-three consecutive patients with ischemic heart failure who underwent both99mTc-MIBI gated SPECT MPI and18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) myocardial metabolic imaging were retrospectively enrolled. SPECT/PET myocardial viability was defined as the reference standard. Segmental myocardial per...

AbstractPurposePleural effusion is a common finding in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). The pathogenesis of pleural effusion in heart failure is multifactorial. However, the role of right and left ventricular function assessed by ECHO cardiogram has not been studied. Therefore, we explored the association between right and left ventricular parameters on echocardiogram in patients with heart failure with and without pleural effusion diagnosed using CT scan of chest.MethodsA case –control study was utilized to explore the objectives. Using strict exclusion criteria, patients admitted with a single diagnosi...

Publication date: Available online 23 August 2019Source: Canadian Journal of DiabetesAuthor(s): Paolo RaggiAbstractIf a disease state is highly prevalent and its consequences are severe, it may be appropriate to seek methods to identify it early to forestall its development and complications. Diabetes mellitus is a proven risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis, although its face and outcome are changing, as shown in contemporary clinical trials. In fact, decompensated heart failure seems to drive the hospitalization rate in patients with diabetes, and mortality from heart failure is reduced with modern hypoglyc...

Introduction: In flu A(H1N1pdm09)-associated pneumonias cardiac complications: an acute heart failure (AHF) and fatal arrythmia (FA) became an important problem.Aims and Objectives: The main purpose of the study was the analysis of AHF and FA frequency and role in flu A(H1N1pdm09)- associated pneumonias. Methods: 99 patients with severe pneumonias were examined. The ethiological verification of the diagnose was performed using polymeraze chain reaction (100% positive result - RNA virus A(H1N1pdm09). Imaging verification was based on the presence of lung consolidation/ ground glass opacity on CT-scans. All the patients recie...

This study clearly goes against what has been the common wisdom for the last 30, 40 years” and may lead to less testing and invasive treatment for such patients in the future, said Dr. Glenn Levine, a Baylor College of Medicine cardiologist with no role in the research. Some doctors still may quibble with the study, but it was very well done “and I think the results are extremely believable,” he said. About 17 million Americans have clogged arteries that crimp the heart’s blood supply, which can cause periodic chest pain. Cheap and generic aspirin, cholesterol-lowering drugs and blood pressure medic...

Conclusion: This study demonstrated that, among the echocardiographic variables, E/E0 was an independent predictor of PC- AKI. This, in turn, suggests that diastolic dysfunction may be a useful parameter in PC-AKI risk stratification.

ConclusionsThese cardiothoracic morphology measurements are important to consider in the design of cardiac devices for heart failure management (e.g. cardiac pacemakers, ventricular assist devices, and implantable defibrillators), since morphology differs by sex and ejection fraction.
