Effect of land use change on mosquito abundance and prevalence of avian haemosporidian parasites in a tropical rainforest of cameroon.
This study highlights the importance of host and mosquito determinants in the transmission dynamics of avian Plasmodium and Haemoproteus infections following habitat changes. Selective logging and young palm oil plantation positively affected the prevalence of Plasmodium. On the other hand, selective logging positively affected the prevalence of Haemoproteus and negatively affected the abundance of mosquitoes, while young palm oil plantation negatively affected this prevalence. Species feeding behavior is also an important determinant to consider for a better understanding of patterns of parasite infections in a changing environment.
