Comparison of the 8th UICC staging system for esophageal and gastric cancers in Siewert type II junctional adenocarcinomas

ConclusionNeither the esophageal nor the stomach staging system is flawless in predicting survival in AEG type II. A marginal superiority of the TNM-EC was found in discriminating survival rates after three and five years. However, the advantage of the TNM-GC lies in the division of the N3 category into N3a and N3b. We therefor suggest a similar division in future TNM-EC classifications to improve its prognostic value.

Authors: Lehwald-Tywuschik N, Steinfurth F, Kröpil F, Krieg A, Sarikaya H, Knoefel WT, Krüger M, Benhidjeb T, Beshay M, Schulte Am Esch J Abstract Surgical therapy for adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction II requires distal esophagectomy, in which a transhiatal management of the lower esophagus is critical. The 'dorsal track control' (DTC) maneuver presented here facilitates the atraumatic handling of the distal esophagus, in preparation for a circular-stapled esophagojejunostomy. It is based on a ventral semicircular incision in the distal esophagus, with an intact dorsal wall for traction cont...

AbstractThe clinical application of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for gastrointestinal (GI) neoplastic lesions has been developed with appreciation for the great efforts and kind support of Dr. Tom Dougherty and his followers ’ contributions. There are several published studies on clinical PDT in the field of GI oncology. Esophageal cancer was one of the first clinical indications for PDT that was approved as an endoscopic procedure in both the United States and Japan. PDT was initially used as a palliative local treat ment for patients with obstructive esophageal cancer. PDT is also indicated for eradicative therapy fo...

The SOX2OT gene is comprised of 10 exons and more than two transcription start sites. Dysregulation of SOX2OT is observed in various tumors, including lung cancer, gastric cancer, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, ovarian cancer, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, osteosarcoma, nasopharyngeal carc...

Conclusion: In the general populations, no significant association was found between Helicobacter pylori infection and the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. However, lower risk was found in the Middle East. Helicobacter pylori infection may reduce the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma, but such "protection effect" may be overestimated. Comparison of detection rates of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and gastric adenocarcinoma (GA) according to age groups and ALDH2 genotype between the 1993 ‐2007 screening period and the 2008‐2018 screening period in Japanese alcohol‐dependent men. The detection rates for ESCC and GA were consistently lower during the 2008‐2018 study period than during the 1993‐2007 study period regardless of age groups and ALDH2 genotype. AbstractBackgroundEsophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), head and neck SCC (HNSCC), and gastric adenocarcinoma (GA) are frequently detected at an early stage using endoscopic scr...
